In Rune Factoiry 1 you will simply die, which means you have to reload from your last save.
Though I don't think XP is the way to go either. But something like a civil corp member finds you and brings you back home and you get charged some gold for this service. And of course the day ends when it happens.
I disagree with gold loss or exp loss. This isn't as much of a hardcore game so it doesn't require harsh hardcore penalties.
Then, every thing else is a matter of how many time you want to "be in portia". The story background and the open world are cool and creative but there is no challenge at all.
In matter of expectation, it's the kind of game I may play half a hour a day and propose it to my nephew because the game is relaxing and easy to play.
Most of these games are like this. I like to compare it to harvest moon (even though harvest moon is about farming), you will reach your goal there is no real stop that throws you out of track or an unbeatable boss that will not let you pass. You might reach the end line (whatever that is for you) sooner or later, but unevitably you will reach it.
If you find the DP lacking you could always buy some random items and delete them as a self imposed penalty.
