When you pull whirlwind with havoc or exhaust reinforced body with recycle, the game assumes the card's cost is equal to your remaining energy.
When you replay whirlwind with double tap or malaise with burst, the game remembers how much you paid and replays the card for that much energy.
When you play such a card yourself though, you must spend energy to tell the game how many times to line up the effect. I guess you assumed that you would play malaise for 0 and apply 0 weak and 0 strength, but the X didn't change to 0 to indicate this, did it?
So ye, now you know.
