Best/your favorite character
I bought the game a few days ago and have been playing a lot, even though i don't play card games i bought it for the rogue-like aspect, loving it so far.

I already unlocked everything with Ironclad and all my wins (3 or 4, 0 ascension) are with him.

I don't understand/can't play the other 2 characters, they seem far weaker than Ironclad and much more slow-paced.

What is your favorite character and why?

Do mods count? Cuz the gatherer is a brilliant example of smooth aesthetics and expanding upon existing mechanics without straying too far or filling too many cards with 5+ lines of text.

(Tbh it's also because I like most shades of green LUL ) But no, I don't really have a clear favorite; just certain mods that don't do it for me like others or the vanilla trio.

It's a hard choice between Defect and Silent, but i'm gonna have to go with Silent. They are all perfectly fine balance wise.

As for modded characters, those are a few of those i favorited:

- The Disciple, for its interesting mechanics. Imagine if you took "The Bomb" card and made a character around it.

- The Poker Player, he's really fun and unlike anyone else. I didn't think he'd be as fun as he ended up being.

- The Animator, no big gimmick, but good, simple cards and lot of content. It's kind of made for anime fans though.

- The Bard, which puts a huge emphasis on card order and will make Monster Hunter hunting horn players feel right at home. Don't forget to click on the highlighted melodies to activate them.

- The Vixen, if you don't mind pokemons. Her gimmick is simple and interesting.

- The Cursed, curse based character with design and quality on par with the base game

There's a few interesting Touhou characters aswell, but my feelings are a bit mixed on them. Administrix, Servant and Marisa are definitely the better ones.

The gatherer was alright, but personally not the one i enjoyed the most.

I find myself playing the defect the most. It has interesting mechanics. Orb spam is a pretty simple and effective strategy, but getting those +1 energy relics are often key to a powerful build. I think the defect and the silent are less intuitive for people who don't play card games, so that might be your problem. Everyone thinks a little differently. But they're both solid characters to play once you figure them out.

Warrior seems easy, but only way to play him is with block stacking, pointless to play anything else as block makes him unkillable and deal most damage (thx to bodyslam, and due to str stacking being slower). Therefore he gets boring quick. If there would be more "Life leech" cards the warrior could play during combat, he could be played offensively, but as he is now, maximum offence will kill you sooner or later (and again, maximum offence in theory is bodyslam anyway - 999 dmg while sitting behind 999 block ? No brainer).

Silent games seem to be complete RNG, either you are a nuclear reactor out of control, or you are a wet towel.
(Nightmare + Burst + 0 cost for cards? YES PLS)

Defect seems to be very solid, winning or losing is often in the hands of player and less RNG than silent, due to his ability to shift cards back and forth (while silent is adept only at drawing more and more). Reboot is a great innate card to reroll your hand if you get dealt bad things on first turn.

I enjoy Silent the most at the moment and Defect second.

Are you talking about Heart runs? Because I won 18 times as Ironclad and only one of that victories had barricade in the deck.
Ironclad is more fun when you play without defense IMHO.

All my wins with Ironclad were with heavy damage decks, i either stacked Perfected Strikes or had very high strength and used Heavy Blade.

I can't really play Silent, as some said too RNG reliable, i've had some decent runs but most are terrible compared to Ironclad, maybe it's just because i have no idea what i'm doing.

I really like Defect and will be trying to learn him, love his channeling mechanic and the way he plays.

Keep in mind i play on Ascension 0, very new to the game, so i'm probably just not knowledgeable enough yet to play characters other than Ironclad.

As for modded characters, i haven't tried any or any mod at all actually, i'm still so early into the game so i might as well get all unlocks with the base characters first.

silent, love to do a poison build

I find Silent to be the easiest to win with, specifically with his shiv/cast many spells build. There's just so many cards and relics that combo nicely with shivs.
zoutzakje Jul 14, 2019 @ 2:21pm
I enjoy Ironclad the most personally. Something about his playstyle i just enjoy. He's currently on A6 and i have never won with a block/bodyslam build yet. Block is important, but working with exhaust, strength and card draws has been more successful for me personally. I'm a big fan of the Corruption card. Picking it up is often a no-brainer for me. The only real hard counter against those type of builds I've noticed so far is the Time Eater, which you thankfully don't always run into.

My close second is the defect. He seems pretty well balanced and i enjoy his orb mechanic a lot. He's currently on A4, though i can't say I've developed a proper strategy for him. I try to get him channeling, defend and energy cards, but I'm not always sure if what I'm doing is the way to go. My fiancee plays the defect almost exclusively and she hasn't had a lot of success either. We'll learn eventually.

The silent can be a lot of fun too, even though i played her the least. She's currently on A3 (bumped up today) and i'm not a big fan of shivs. Not sure why (though i don't mind the ninja scroll relic if i find it). With her i tend to go for block and poison, and draw/discard. With my victory today i had a bunch of poison cards and 2 upgraded Catalysts. I got the 100 poison damage achievement and the kill 3 enemies with poison in one combat achievement. Almost got the transient kill achiev too, but unlucky draws caused him to have 89 hp left. Time Eater was a big joke.

So even though i consider Ironclad my main, i do enjoy playing all of them. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and each of them can beat the game easily or get totally owned. Death is part of the fun!

I agree, Silent's too random

Couldn't even win my coffee dripper one relic achievement. :(

Silent is random, but I like the challenge of dealing with those curveballs. I feel that if you can get past the RNG hurdle you can make some astonishing builds, and you really earn them. Sometimes you have to do some wildly counter-intuitive thinking to get there, and sometimes it's just a blind gamble. Like any game with RNG, it's how you mitigate that gamble that's the fun part.
DJDiceZ Jul 14, 2019 @ 7:32pm
It's no more random than the other characters. A lot of us can achieve consistent wins and near-wins on Silent, even on underwhelming runs.

Ironchad is superior.

Only because he studied the blade, but Silent can teleport behind you and knows how to kill in 15 different ways. Nothing personnel though, kid.
