in general frozen highlands can be somewhat short of food, but this changes from map to map.
after you scout out the edges of the horde at the start of the map you should answer 3 things.
1st how are you going to place a wood mill and also a stone quarry, so you can get the minerals you need for a barracks
2nd where are you going to get food for your housing if you don't have alot of good food options then you will want to plan out where should your first tesla towers go so that you can maximize the available food sources you can bring into your reach.
3rd where do you plan on putting your first housing district, you don't have to worry about this as much at first because its not a big deal if you have to put a few patchs of houses here and there if your starting area doesn't have alot of open space for housing.
if you can afford a WONDER you are not struggling
Just restart it a few times to get some green grass and not 8-ways to attack your base.
Got some lucky farm areas and majors. Now for the desolate wasteland
Odds are you will either hate it and never touch it again or hate it and never play anything else again. Its a masochistic map, but arguably the most combat-focused map where you can't just mindlessly clear the map. None of the other maps will likely be of much interest once you get use to it due to how much easier they are. I often lose track of time starting day 20 because I'm spending so much attention clearing the map without starting a train.
Oh, silent beholder is quite fun to get since you can see just how many special zombies have infested the map. Harpies for days.

You must try brutal 80 days on desolate wasteland, I just finally beat it yesterday after like 50 tries. I never really got so far into the later days so I screw up a little at the end and end up with bad score. I can't manage to build any wonder until the final wave hit.
I'm already addicted to this...
Shocking tower, Lucifer, and Iron Wire trap work better than I'd expected them to.
Map 3 take me a lot of time, but i did it when i start to use max Snips/Thanathos with shock towers at good places.
After that i oneshot Map 4.
Just try to no make too much advanced building, because they cost a lot. So you have to expand.
