At first I tried Mastadon on my first playthrough, then 2nd I have pig and 3rd Smilodon now leopard on my current one atm so far haven't gotten to act 3 yet on each though except my first one I beat the game but deleted character file since I messed up the game badly not getting good endings.
So far I think the leopard is the best pet in the beginning, Mastadon becomes better later on by flinging small creatures across the map, not sure about the rest of the pets, oh I tried centipede as well for a level 5 but deleted that playthrough as well so didn't get very far on that one.
But all in all I think I heard leopard / smilodon might be the best dps pets
I use the Mastodon on my Unfair playthrough (Fey Sorcerer). It has pretty great natural armor growth rates and you can easily get to 41 AC on it right around when Troll Trouble starts (level 6 mastodon IIRC). It makes a lot of the fights more bearable... though it'll still get one or two shot when a natural 20 gets randomly rolled by an enemy (which is rather frequently -- I'm starting to think even the rolls are weighted in Unfair).
All Hail Baroness Leopard.
That said, Smilodon is a great shapeshift for vivisectionist or rogue.
Yeah the leopard has that too
From what I've heard, the BOAR is the tankiest of the pets available.
Giant Centipede and Monitor Lizard both get a poison bite attack. But in my personal experience, it's not as useful as it sounds, because the enemies keep making fortitude saves.
