Edit: No I finally figured it out I was in the wrong ring...
Use Poppoi for the magic on ice orb to cool lava in dwarve cave/underground palace
Assuming you get Undine before the haunted forest... Can't remember exactly.
Only Primm and Popoi can use 'magic'. Primm gets support magic and Popoi gets offensive magic.
In the ring menu, the magic menu is between the options menu and the equipment menu. You can not see all stats considering magic there though and the menu is only visible if you open the menu from Primm or Popoi's POV.
So you need to either play them or use the other menu button. (you can switch character pov while in the menu though)
Offensive magic needs targets. Popoi can therefore only use magic when there are enemies within your screen around your character. (It has a range limit and this seems to be based on your selected character's center.)
Primm can use magic at various locations. Healing can be spammed in the hotel, which is a good way to 'train' it. Magic can level up. Hotels can heal your MP for low cost. etc. etc.
Magic level cap is determined by the amount of ' seeds ' you synced the mana sword with.
it kinda works similar to Weapon Reforge and Weapon levels, but differently. Magic is leveled when it is 'used', where a Weapon Level gains exp per kill while holding a weapon.
The ring menu is basically a tab menu. When you press up or down, you go to the next tab or back. Left and right scroll over the menu items.
When you're in the Magic Menu, you need to click an elemental spirit to reveal what magic it provides. You then select the magic, then the target, then let go.
I'm not sure if you can set it to a quick slot like weapon switching, since I don't use it.
To see your magic level, you need to have either Primm or Popoi's menu open. Go to the Options ring and select the icon with the wand and blue bars from there.

Not sure why you need a guide, as the game tells you where to go. ;sweat;
But, you can only use magic after you obtained it from Undine (in the cave next to the water palace, which becomes accessable at some point as the story progresses.) You will need to defeat at least four bosses without, but you don't really need it to be fair. With magic, you can kill the fifth boss in 3 hits. I guess the original game maybe more difficult. xD Somehow bosses are easier than the mobs around.
So you need to obtain Popoi first, which if you can get to the underground palace entrance shouldn't take too long. After that you need to clear the Witch Castle and defeat the famous Spikey Tiger boss. You can get Undine's magic after this. If you already have Undine's magic, you should have Popoi as well.
So to make things simple and summarized, try using Popoi, go to the magic ring, Undine and
to spoil which exact magic you need to use, try that ice ball attack on the crystal.
This is why rpg games still need instruction booklets..i had the same thing happened to me one time i played the old legend of mana game on ps2. I bought a copy of the game without instruction booklet (it was used). Anyways, i had to look online (gamefaqs) and ask people how to do special weapon moves because i could not figure out how to press the buttons to do it. Even the strategy guide made for the game at the time did not even tell how to do it. I remember i actually wrote a complain email to bradley guides for screwing it up. Later i noticed on their now gone website, they had a listing of how to do it on their website under "update to printed guides"..lol.
Sorry mate, but here u dont need primms magic, u need poipoi´s magic.. like the orginal game..
