Want to play Pre-Final Cut Disco? Here is how in 2021
I'm tired and lazy rn so this doesn't include pics or vids, tho I will make an actual guide for this probably tomorrow.

I'm here to tell you that it's possible, and you can even still continue with your saves! (I have only tested things for an hour or two, but I haven't had any crashes, corruption of files or saves, or any bugginess in my limited testing experience).

So, how? Thankfully it's quite easy! You should first consult this guide and follow my cliffsnotes steps below, and don't worry I've taken multiple steps out for you.

STEPS

0. Close Steam, download Notepad++ for manifest editing

1. Download the Msoft .net binary - I went with sdk 5.0.300 x64. Gotta use 7zip to extract the zip ofc. Msoft NET [dotnet.microsoft.com]

2. Download Depotdownloader from github [github.com]

3. I would move/cut both of these zip files to a folder such as Downloads/Fixing Disco or whathaveyou, but that's just me. Unzip the files into the location of your choice.

4. Navigate to where you unzipped the Depotdownloader to, and in the file explorer addressbar delete the given text (C:User/downloads/whatever), and type cmd.exe

5. Paste this info into the cmd prompt - be sure to edit for your own info, and no, do not make it caps! Did this for emphasis.

dotnet DepotDownloader.dll -app 632470 -depot 632471 -manifest 3499130543868275315 -username YOURUSERNAME -password YOURPASSWORD

Press enter and wait while the game contents are downloaded - that can take 1-?? hours depending on your internet connection, as it is downloading the original ~12-14gb game

6. Move the contents of the download into your Steam Library, call it Disco OG or etc.

7. Locate the manifest file (appmanifest_632470) and edit the 'StateFlags' value to 4, 'Autoupdate behavior' to 1, and then set it to Read Only by right-clicking on the file, Properties, Read Only.

8. Launch Steam in offline mode and enjoy your original Disco!
See update and comment #21 below

Pls consult that other guide as this is very barebones, per simplicity.

UPDATE:
Thanks to ZenArcade for the information below on how to play the game, normally, without needing Offline mode, and still enabling achievements!

Ok, figured it out. In file appmanifest_623470.acf, I updated buildid, manifest, size values to match the current. So in this case:

buildid" "7853998"

then under "installed depot" 632471:

"manifest" "1762011823874403260"
"size" "10068598871"

I also set "SizeOnDisk" "10068598871", not sure if that matters

Now even when online I'm not required to update and can play the game. Thanks a lot ZAUM for making your customers go through this needless hassle.

See below. I also set all the "Bytes..." fields to zero. Also "StateFlags" definitely needs to be 4. And, don't forget to set file back to read-only. I didn't mention before but I got the buildid, manifest, size values all from Steamdb.

"LastUpdated" "1634261654"
"UpdateResult" "0"
"SizeOnDisk" "10068598871"
"buildid" "7853998"
"BytesToDownload" "0"
"BytesDownloaded" "0"
"BytesToStage" "0"
"BytesStaged" "0"
"AutoUpdateBehavior" "1"
"AllowOtherDownloadsWhileRunning" "0"
"ScheduledAutoUpdate" "0"
"InstalledDepots"
{
"632471"
{
"manifest" "1762011823874403260"
"size" "10068598871"
}
}

So that they (re)play the game that they've bought?

If developers really cared for the people who initially supported them, they would just make OG available through beta branch in the steam client, which would pretty much do all the steps above on a click of a button in a native steam environment.

Thanks so much! Great to hear the real Cuno again!

I didn't even have to start Steam in offline mode. I put all the files in an unrelated directory and used the "Add a non-Steam game" to launch it. Hopefully I won't have problems down the road but it seems good so far. No achievements, but that's fine. Thanks again, ridiculous that we have to go to these lengths.

This, 1000x. I can't believe they A) Refuse to implement such a simple, basic ability that sooo many indie games utilize, and B) Still have said not a single word about such a massive change or why it was done. Definitely makes me hesitant to purchase any products from this co/developer in the future, which is sad cuz I really liked em when I first found out about the game

Ah nice! And it truly is ridiculous, yes. Bummer deal you don't have achievements, but at least you don't have to turn off wifi or firewall Steam to load this game. Always tradeons and tradeoffs to everything

The complete silence is just bizarre. We are forced to guess what their motivations could be.

(1) Artistic / "George Lucas" disease. The devs worked hard on the Final Cut, are understandably proud of what they did, and generally have been sitting around sniffing their own farts and decided that this is the "real" version and no one should play the original.

(2) Financial. Pure speculation, maybe they can somehow avoid paying some people who worked on the original by cutting old voices / assets? Also, they want to sell copies to consoles and don't want the console version to be perceived as a different experience vs PC.

(3) Personal. Devs are mad at people who worked on the old game for some reason.

(4) Just haven't gotten around to creating out a separate Steam entry for "Disco Classic". Doubt this is it though, as they would have just said it was coming soon.

They know any of 1,2,3 would not make them look great so, say nothing. That's all I got.

No need to use an extra app, just add
-console
to the Steam shortcut's launch options, run it and in the newly added console window run
download_depot 632470 632471 3499130543868275315

See this guide for more info https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=889624474

Newp, first thing I tried. Steam disabled/broke the console depot download function in 2019 or 2020.

Btw, thanks for linking everyone to a guide that has a furry on it...? wut, why

Thanks, this worked for me - such a pleasure to hear those emotion filled voices again and get back the space for my imagination to fill in the rest. There are a few bits where the instructions were vague/could be improved (1) specifying exactly which level of files to copy from the downloaded game archive (i.e. exclude the two top directories) (2) precisely where to copy them to (Steam\steamapps\common\DiscoOG) (3) how to actually launch the game once in off-line mode (maybe I was doing something wrong but I could not do it from within the steam client and instead needed to double-click the Disco application from the new DiscoOG directory). Thanks again, it has brought the game back to life!

Does the "Classic" voiceover mode in the Options menu do this now? I haven't played the game since release, I don't really remember what it sounded like originally.

Kaz - Check the Big Oof Discussion thread, it's got a good amount documented. You'll absolutely notice when you talk to Cuno. And no, it doesn't, that's the whole thing. If they had made an option to have the OG voice acting, this company would still be getting the highest of praises from me, and many others in this forum. Or if they had included a beta that had the last previous Pre-Final Cut (the manifest listed here) version of the game. All would be peachy. Well, that and if they had done QA and bug testing on the Final Cut edition, which I've heard has numerous bugs :( sorry I'm rambling lol

David - Yeah, I meant to create an actual guide with pics and/or a video step-by-step, but I haven't made the time yet. Maybe the day after i get my second shot haha

Yeah you won't need everything that was downloaded, the other guide goes over this but only briefly. I may have been too concise, you're right, number 2 was a helpful tip :) As for 3, I'm able to launch it from my Steam Library - What happened when you tried to launch it from within steam?
