Anyone know what the Palerunner achievement is?
I love achievement hunting so I'm ready for hardmode! But this is a secret achievement I can't find any info on, anyone know how to get this please?

I just discovered a new method and got the achievement an hour ago. (Not sure if it is reproducible though.)

Here is how:

  1. go to the doomed commercial area from the bookshop/gym side.
  2. enter the dark area with the flashlight equipped (inaccessible otherwise), you will find a bird specimens right after you entered the first room.
  3. park your character at the righthand side of the bird specimen.
  4. unequip flashlight
  5. quick save and quick load
  6. click/interact with Kim and you will be teleported back to the entrance and receive the achievement.

You can also check this video I made:

Let me know if this method works for you. I hope it is helpful.:claptrap:

The achievement came with the hardcore mode update, so it's not surprising there's no info on it yet.

On a third-party website, the description for the achievement goes:

"Phase-shift for 60 seconds"

Let's dissect that description.

The term: "phase-shift" is used only once in Disco Elysium when speaking with Cuno (after you have been into Cuno's shack once), but I don't think that has anything to do with the achievement (or does it...?)

The name of the achievement suggests that it has something to do with the Pale and some kind of movement activity.

Some ideas that spring into mind are:

  • Teleporting up the ladder near the Feld Mural
  • Dream sequences
  • 2mm hole quest line + related tasks
  • Mega Rich Light Guy
  • Entroponetic crosstalk interaction
  • Paledriver interaction
  • Joyce and the Pale
  • Insulindian Phasmid interactions

The "60 seconds" part is what gets me. 60 seconds? What interaction or event in the game mentions time precisely?

Each dialogue option advances time by 23 seconds, so it's possible you need 3 interactions of some... category. Pale-related?

If we choose to speculate about the name of the achievement: "Palerunner"

Within the game files, two similar nouns stand out:

Palediver

Paledriver

What does this mean? I have no idea.

Now on to Pale-related items. There are some that fit this category:

  • Alcohol - Pale-Aged Vodka
  • Book - Medicinal Purposes of the Pale

Intracting with the book item, some conversations regarding the Pale specifically mention "walking". The following lines are extracted from a slightly older version of the game data:

"Have you taken any walks through the pale recently?"

"I don't even know what this 'pale' thing is, how could I have walked through it?"

The book is the most promising one so far. I'll try it and see how it goes.

Cheers for replying! I assume it's what you said about phase shifting during three interactions or something, maybe a playthrough with investment into skills that encourage that would help.. I'm redownloading the game now to try a hardcore run and see if I get the achievement, I enjoy the game regardless so I don't mind getting the other two achievements and then going back for the Palerunner one but I'll post here if I get it and how I think I got it!

No luck so far.

Things I tried: talking about phase shifting to Cuno, "teleporting" up the ladder near the Feld Mural. I bought the book on the Pale, talked to the Paledriver about her experiences and solved the Pale stuff with Joyce and Soona. I internalised Jamais Vu, Cleaning out the Rooms, Motorway South. None of that was sufficient.

The only thing I can think of offhand that I missed is doing the jump to the cloak from the alternate path into the docks.

I'll try all those things today.. From the name, "Palerunner", it's got to be phase shifting as much as possible or something like that!

The icon for the achievement has weird symbols on it. The book "Medicinal Purposes of the Pale" also has symbols on its cover. Hmmmmm

msgctxt "Dialogue System/Conversation/491/Entry/3/Dialogue Text"
msgid ""
"\"Medicinal Purposes of the Pale.\" The cover of this heavy tome features a "
"number of esoteric symbols."

I was hoping for the book to be it, but no luck on the book yet. I can't seem to trigger certain dialogue branches from the book for some reason.

A reddit post from way back (https://www.reddit.com/r/DiscoElysium/comments/dworhm/the_library_materials_any_secrets_to_be_found/) mentions the book telling the OP that he can gather ingredients for the concoction from someone who has been through the Pale multiple times.

I dug through the game files and yes, such a dialogue exists. I can't figure out which dialogue option connects to it though. :/

# Actor = You
msgctxt "Dialogue System/Conversation/491/Entry/143/Dialogue Text"
msgid "Great, so where can I get all this stuff?"

# Actor = Medicinal Purposes of the Pale
msgctxt "Dialogue System/Conversation/491/Entry/145/Dialogue Text"
msgid ""
"From the pale, of course. Or perhaps from some enterprising entroponaut. "
"Where you would find one of those, though, the book does not say."

The book also mentions some kind of meditation / ritual-thingy you can do in the Pale by walking through it and/or meditating in the Pale, but I can't get that conversation to advance any further. This is after editing the save file to give myself 20 in all attributes, so I guess that's a dead end.

The ritual mentions having to strip naked and meditate in the Pale. I tried doing that near the 2mm hole, with and without Pale-Aged Vodka active, and nope nothing.

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not, but when choosing the 3 ingredients to create the potion, only your first try counts. Every attempt afterwards causes the book to respond with the same answer as your first attempt. (The 3 correct ingredients are: Option 1 -> Option 2 -> Option 3) You get a 5 XP reward regardless of the combination of ingredients.

And that's it from me for the book.

Maybe dance for 60 seconds in the church.
Maybe running non stop for 60 sec? Will try this out once i get a chance to play the game again.

Things to be experimented with from what I can gather: getting the Boaideiro thought and having conversations with Manana/Paledriver maybe? Pale-aged vodka?

It seems like it might be related to the Inland Empire skill, so might be worth experimenting on a high psyche/IE build.

I have also found conversations in the script where you say you don't want to be a cop anymore and want to be an Entreponaut instead. So possibly conversations you could trigger with Joyce/Kim about the Pale?

The symbols from the image of the achievement appear to be taken from the image of this item:

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/766110385444349259/A6E53DDB878696D0064EC95617F23AECEC6C0F7E/

The name of the file is labelled with the word SHORTWAVE

Searching through the game's database export reveals an item:

"title": "Name",
"value": "Shortwave: An Operator's Handbook",
"type": 0,
"typeString": ""

Is this possibly connected to:

Ruby's machine? Harry's old dream of becoming an entroponaut? Harry's entroponetic theory for the 2mm hole at the church?

I'm gonna try looking for the book. We'll see how it goes.

New problem: I can't find the book.

It's in the game files though, but may not be available in-game?

{ "id": 3364, "fields": [ { "title": "Name", "value": "doomed.book_buy_shortwave", "type": 0, "typeString": "" }, { "title": "Initial Value", "value": "False", "type": 2, "typeString": "CustomFieldType_Boolean" }, { "title": "Description", "value": "triggers the buy option for shortwave", "type": 0, "typeString": "" } ] },

Edit: Probably not available in the game. Can't seem to find anything that refers to the variable "doomed.book_buy_shortwave"

This game is insanely brilliant, in a way I'm enjoying how this one secret achievement has us all running about trying to work it out!

It was the same with gluten-free pie, figuring out which of the 24 skills and dialogue options produced it was a pain D :

Don't get me wrong, this game is brilliant, but that has nothing to do with the brilliance of the game. Quite the opposite, it's just the sad state of gamers who care more for achievements than the actual brilliance of the game they're playing.
Sisyphus Jan 26 @ 12:39pm
Well, it's the sign of a game that people care about in regards to expending the amount of effort they have. For me, part of the appeal of figuring out the achievements is trying to figure out if there's some easter egg or story bit that I missed in previous playthroughs.

I don't see any evidence that the people analysing the game's achievements are indifferent to the brilliance of the game, it's completely the opposite.

We here all enjoy the game and some of us enjoy chasing achievements on top of that. And I made my comment about the game being brilliant as a humoured point, that the game must be good enough to warrant a group of people trying to deduce what the secret achievements are.
