Try running the game in windowed mode and with a smaller resolution. It could help a lot.
Something you can try is keeping bots and items to a minimum in your game, so only have a skeleton bot crew (or keep multiplayer games to 6 or 8 maximum and one bot only), and sell any materials and items you don't need. I'm sure the devs are still looking into the fps problems, it will just take time to pinpoint the causes (it may be a few).
after playing for an hour or 2, barotrauma starts to struggle, keys and mouse movement will register after a couple seconds (or 0.5), do note that it is ONLY barotrauma, my computer is doing completely alright.
another problem being.. i lag in the server lobbies. its not okay to lag in a 2D screen, and that has never, never happened before, i also do not lag in the main menu/settings screen, and when (while in the said lobby menu) i press escape and the esc menu opens, the lag stops. that's really something. other than those 2 issues my game runs kind of stable most of the time.

It does. If I would compare a computer to a human body, I'd say motherboards are the nervous system and/or skeleton, the power supply is the heart and graphics cards are muscles. Processors ( the GHz part ) are bit like brains I guess, although hard drives and RAM also have "brain-like" properties. Processors have a pretty big impact on the overall efficiency of a computer and this includes videos games of course.
The Barotrauma store page states that a "Quad Core 3.0 GHz" is recommended. Anything below that may cause performance issues.
If I would take myself as an example, I'm transitioning to a new PC right now but I can play Barotrauma really well with Intel Core i5-2400 CPU 3.10 GHz. I played the game quite a lot last weekend. I never had performance issues even with a thresher swarm and about 10 crewmembers on board, with a couple of hammerheads thrown in there at some point.
I haven't tried playing with bots though - I'm a multiplayer guy. Maybe bots add an additional toll? I've seen a few people here talking about this happening with bots.
To be honest, I'm getting more and more the feeling that this performance issue is more about the game evolving rapidly through updates with a lot of new stuff added in everytime. Barotrauma has deeper mechanics than it used to. It had a visual overhaul, new visual effects, and other additional content that eventually adds more weight to the game file-size-wise. I'm not saying optimization is not possible, but perhaps the difference between minimum and required specs is becoming more visible now.
Yet, some people seemingly have good enough PCs and still have issues. It's very puzzling!
Laptop computers usually come with default graphics cards. Those aren't very strong and can also result in performance issues even for 2D games like Barotrauma.
I've given some tips earlier but I'd like to make a list here for those who have performance issues and want to try a few solutions:
- Make sure all your in-game settings are set to the lowest level. There's this handy guide that can help: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2263054260
- Try switching between view modes: fullscreen and fullscreen windowed may offer different performances, perhaps depending on the graphics cards you're using. If you don't see ameliorations, try windowed mode.
- Make sure your partition ( ex: C:\ ) containing your operating system is never more than 1/3 full. You will notice a computer is much faster when it's rather empty - it's most apparent when you format. My operation system partition is always 1/4 full, I never install anything on it besides OS-related software. All my data is stored on D:\ or following partitions/hard drives. It's a bit unrelated but it's always easier to format that way as well since you can save things you don't want to format on other partitions. GParted is a software that can help you make partitions.
- Install your game on your fastest, "master" hard drive disk if you have more than one. Try installing it on your hard drive containing your operating system and see if you see any changes... A computer will always focus on the "master" hard drive first upon booting, so I'm assuming it does the same while running. It may not do much but maybe it'll help a little.
- If your computer ( and CPU ) is getting old and you have used it regularly, maybe it's time to add new thermal paste to your CPU. Heating can affect a PC's performance over time - not that much, but it can be noticeable. There's a bunch of tutorials on how to apply thermal paste yourself if you want to, but computer repair shops can do that as well of course.
We all are experiencing STARTGAME errors and missing item errors, again i think from Among the Ancients, maybe even before that up untill now, in the beginning it was almost unplayable, right now, its mostly limited to steam p2p error which can be "fixed" by disconnecting and restarting server between each mission, its playable, but still annoying and were sad that one of us is pretty much just standing there, unable to do anything. Poor man thinks its fault of his PC, but it looks like its not that case. We had no such problems before certain update.
We all love this game, but this problems are keeping us from fully enjoying it, sadly, for most of the time now, we are patiently waiting for the fix. I really hope devs will find the root of this. I would love to jump in again with my crew, with no fear of such issues.
For first:
r5 2600
Asrock b450
16 GB RAM 2999
rtx 3060
Game installed on SSD NVME
I tested game trying to get fps drops (in single, because my friends really tired from input lags and fps drops) and what I saw.
1. Game don't use fully several cores/threads during fps drops - only one thread loaded and... I saw many spikes, and no one get 100%.
2. I noticed first fps drops during campaing after install Enhanced Periscopes upgrades.
3. Game really input lagging if you take pirate mission in late game.
4. When I taked new submarine in the outpost and change on it. I saw 60 fps (Hooray!).
5. When I moved items items from old submarine, fps drop. So I think problem with crafting materials, what can reacts violently when in contact with water or need other special storage conditions. Why I think about this? Because I try to get some fun in abandoned outpost and put in storage container 8 stack of Volatile Fulgurium Fuel Rod. It was really lagging. But after I deconstruct all this fuel rods, I get back 20 fps.
I did all this tests before Urban Expanses while all worked. But now I have new problem - new colonies. Even Fix Perfomance give up there.
Fully agree with statement about fps dropping during pirate missions in late game, and if crew takes more than one mission in addition to that (or there are hunting grounds present), its even worse. It also seems from other posts that new colonies also are causing this problem.
