There weren't any updates that made the game not work on Windows 7. I used to use W7 and I currently use W10, and didn't have any issues with either (when it comes to playing this game) unless a bad GPU driver messed things up.

Tell him to update everything and see if that helps. If not, it might be a time for an OS upgrade. I know how tedious it is and W10 isn't that great (since it's W7 with a coarse coat of paint), but if he can gut it properly, he'll be fine.

Appreciate the answer. Got it working earlier and forgot to address the topic. The way 2 people I was playing with fixed their crashing was setting power management to prefer maximum performance in nvidia settings.
