I wore the Ingot Vambraces for 2 Health Boost, then crafted the first level of the Health Charm for another point, so I'd have a total of 3 Health Boost.
I ate the Fish Platter at the Canteen for elemental resistances (to help protect me against Blast and Fire damage).
Then once in the mission I ate a Max Potion so it would max out my Health Bar.
On the console, I beat him with the Insect Glaive. I brought traps to keep him on the ground and went to camp to restock.
I had a much easier time with the Great Sword later on, using hit-and-run tactics.
Now, though, I just use ranged weapons against Bazel: Thunder Bow, Pierce HBG, Rapid Fire Thunder LBG, etc.
And just work your way up to the head from there. Keeping an eye on what he does at every move.
It's not really an armor recommendation, but still a way to to avoid getting exploded.
Pay attention to where his scales are when fighting him. Eventually he will run out of bombs in the front and back making these areas vulnerable to attack. If both are full, stay to the center of the body or focus on riding attacks. When red, keep your distance and let the rage run its course.
Depending on map, you can take advantage of some of the local wildlife. Odogaron, Giros, Disblos, Rathalos, Rathian, and a few others will fight back when Bazel damages them. This can create openings.
Plus he is V E R Y aggro and will attack every other monster, yet never engage in a "Turf War". Still, try to use this to your advantage and let other monster do the work for you.
Nothing will properly prepare you for the first fight against him.
