Why am I getting the ERROR message "You are not logged in to mod.io. Use the Mods menu from the main menu to login.

I am logged in to Mod.io with my steam account., from the main menu.

I have done the following
Removed the %localappdata%\insurgency directory
uninstalled Sandstorm
re-installed Sandstorm

Rebooted my PC

In your mod.io profile, you need to generate an OAuth 2 key - sign in to mod.io with your steam profile, then on the left menu click on API Access then under the OAuth 2 section, generate a token (doesn't seem to matter if it's read only or read+write but I just used the latter just in case) then copy that and open Engine.ini located in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Insurgency\Saved\Config\WindowsClient

In engine.ini there should be a section titled [/script/modkit.modioclient] - if it doesn't exist, launch the game then click on the mods button and it'll then create it. There's a line that says AccessToken - you need to copy the access token into here and it should then let you download maps when you join the server.

edit: ok it seems like I could actually sub to a mod via the in-game mods menu. Even the ratings buttons worked too. When I restarted the game however, just got an infinite loading circle lmao. Then I opened the game later in the day and then I could see the mod list again.

Longest early access game I've ever played

There's not even an option to log in to mod.io - at the main menu you're signed into NWI services and steam, but even under the mods page where that error message tells you to go to, there's nothing indicating an option or button to sign in to mod.io, so mods are almost completely inaccessible for people suffering from this issue.

(EDITED. This section used to be in engine.ini)

1. Find this file:
c:\Users\{yourprofilename}\AppData\Local\Insurgency\Saved\Config\WindowsClient\GameUserSettings.ini

2. Make a backup of it.

3. Edit GameUserSettings.ini with notepad

4. Find [/script/modkit.modioclient]

5. Delete the entire modi.io section (including the header, until the end of the CachedUser line.)

6. Save and load up the game.

7. Browse community servers.

8. Tick MODDED on the left of the server browser list,

9. You should be asked to agree to MOD.IO terms, etc.

A. Joining a modded server should now work.

This seems like alot of BS to be able to do what I was doing easily a week ago. Why all the file rewrites and extra crap? What changed?

worked after restarting my game twice, thanks Ed

It's in the known issues and this answer is posted almost daily.

Doing what Ed said to do (in the official answer to this thread) did not work for me. Here's what worked (thanks to Fffearsome).
1. Sign in to mod.io with your steam profile, then on the left menu click on API Access then under the OAuth 2 section, generate a new OAuth 2 key (as Ed described).
2. Edit the engine.ini file found in c:\Users\{yourprofilename}\AppData\Local\Insurgency\Saved\Config\WindowsClient\Engine.ini
3. But instead of editing the Access Token, Delete the entire modi.io section including the header, until the end of CachedUser.
4. Save the file.
5. Start Sandstorm (or as we now call it...UpdateStorm) and click on Mods.
6. Click on the mods.io button in the lower left. At that point, you'll be prompted to accept the terms of service of mods.io.
7. You'll probably find that you're already logged into mods.io. (I did).
8. Click on "click here to return to game" at the very top of the screen.
9. Go start playing on the server with the mods and you'll be prompted to start downloading mods - flippin terabytes of them.
Hope that works for you - it did for me.

No.

You don't need to manually make an oauth key yourself.
All you had to do was delete the engine.ini and run the game and click on the mods and accept the popup.
At that point the game will generate the token for you.

The answer is two posts up, here it is again:
