I can't really speak for mp because I only play co-op (players vs bots) myself, but I'd highly suggest looking up gameplay online to see for yourself if you'd enjoy it. Personally I'd really recommend sandstorm because it combines elements of more mil-simmy tactical shooters into a semi-casual gameplay experience (the game itself is NOT a milsim, despite how many people will say otherwise), with the average match lasting about 20 minutes or so. To answer your questions:
1. Voice chat is possible if you have a mic but it isn't required to play the game, some servers will have more communication going on than others but you'll find there's plenty of people who play silently. I'd assume if you're looking to play multiplayer then a mic will benefit you more, as communication tends to aid you better. Playing with a group isn't required, you can jump into a match solo as most people do anyway.
2. Despite how people constantly whine here about how dead the game allegedly is, you'll find that the average server you hop onto will have a healthy pop, on average between 6-8 other people on a co-op match for instance, with twice that on a mp match. There's usually about a 3k-5k pop average but it fluctuates with weekends and such.
3. The only progression systems currently in the game is your player level, which really only serves to show to other people how long you've been playing. You gain experience that automatically levels you up after each match you play. The second one is the cosmetic system, which awards you with in-game currency after each match to spend on drip for your characters. All weapons, attatchments, and gear are fully available with each class, but you have to level up a bit before unlocking the special classes like demolitions, gunner, marksman, and commander.
4. There's multiple gamemodes for both co-op (PVE) and competitive (PVP). The "operations" are simply the names of major updates that periodically release (for example, the most recent is Operation Livewire.
Basically sandstorm is a semi-casual military shooter that embodies a heavy degree of customization and emphasizes teamplay and elements of more harcore shooters. You can easily jump into a match and have an absolute blast, it's my personal favorite game in my library. Highly recommend that you watch some videos of gameplay and then give it a shot yourself.
2. You find servers in 2-8 seconds, they are full aswell
3. No game progression in game changing things, just level ups which show how many hours you played
4. Didn't quite get you, but there is no MM and no SMBB
" grindy " ? There is literally nothing relevant you have to grind for.
he means grinding for the xp that doesn't even give you anything
What is it supposed to give you?
Plus, cosmetics are unlocked with like every level. lol. Its really not hard to buy clothes and stuff in this game.
tbh I would put it up on the top shelf of FPS/tactical shooters
Playing since alpha with 650+ hours:
1. Most players dont use chat, also you have command voices (yes, no, spot enemy direction, request help, etc)
2. There still some players, always more than 1000. You can find games on coop or pvp!
3. Theres no progression with guns, each level up game give you a free cosmetic and some credits to unlock any cosmetic you want. Every 3 matches or 2 you level up (I'm like 500+)
4. Theres no operator system like R6S, you can create your own character and same some configs to use it in every match (for security and insurgents). Competitive... They removed it. So there's only matchmaking, serverbrowser and local play.
If you wanna play this to chill for an hour is good. Just be aware there are not so much maps.
