I think it would be more fair to compare the AUG to the G36 given the shared point buy cost....the separation here being that whilst both feel a bit compromised for one or other reason, you're trading velocity, punch and the peculiar optics options of the AUG for the auto fire rate of the G36.
Whilst I still feel the M4A1 is in an awkward place now with it's 5 point cost alongside the other 5 point rifles, the M4A1 still feels way better than the AUG. If I want a compact rifle with an auto setting I'd go for the M4A1 (or preferably the VHS...or even the G36) hands down. If I want something with a bit more reach and stability I'll still opt for an M16 or perhaps a battle rifle with an appropriate set-up.
I think it came from personal preference in that case. Before AUG came out I admit G36 recoil is horrible but I love to use it, probably because it's from HK
Its fun because the gun is pretty inexpensive, so I love decking it out with a MASS underbarrel, laser sight, the 42-round clipazine, and the AUG's 1.5x scope which looks clean as ♥♥♥♥ with the laser sight.
That entire setup is ten supply; a bit pricey, but any other AR can only get a 35-round mag with an underbarrel shotgun equipped.
For me, I'd take both of them for various scenarios due to how solid they're as controllable full-auto assault rifles (I'm Observer main) while being able to attach other attachments for utilities. You may wanna treat AUG as a bit more controllable L85A2 in slightly lower RoF, though.
Well good thing I'm not you. AUG is amazing in PvP.
Personal preference will always be a thing - but it's still an important thing. It applies in all sorts of sports, martial arts and now video gaming - certain items or styles just have a subjective 'feel' to them, hard stats and statistics be damned.
Having had a little more time to look into it I think I've boiled it down to something more tangible.
Firstly, I'm sure there are 'soft stats' for each weapon not included in the go to stat lists. I think there's something going on there.
Second, the sound. The sound of a weapon can be a big thing in how a piece of equipment feels in a video game where you aren't actually handling anything tangible. The AUG sounds like a grease gun, it has a hollow pop that doesn't feel immediate. The M4 and M16 have an immediate 'crack' where you can feel each round. Whilst this makes no hard difference in stats, it definitely effects how it feels to play with it and your own perception of performance. With the M4/M16 each round feels like it's gone where I want it and has had an effect. I press LMB, immediate 'crack', job done.
Thirdly, the spam setting. The rate of fire combined with the grease gun popcorn sound...and the feel of the recoil pattern. The stats say it's good but it subjectively 'feels' like it's just pop popping a bouncy pattern. I'll take the the M4 with it's slightly lower penetration but it's immediate and intense burst on target.
Fourth - the AUG specific scopes. In reality those designs fit a specific doctrinal purpose. In game, where gunplay is highly arcade (bite me) those doughnut rings are a bit...eh. I don't need an estimate of range, especially in a game where ballistics don't fit a real world model. The physics absolutely allow me to put a red dot on a target on pretty much anything I can see in a scope and just put the bullet where I want it to go. So, a red dot or clear reticle works just fine - if I'm reaching out I'll just do a 'hat' holdover. I don't need to calculate whether a hostile is at a certain distance based on whether their silhouette fills a circle. In this game it means I'm trying to make a headshot based on roughly lining up a bouncy mario set of head and shoulders in an empty space with a ring around it. I'd rather just take a 2x red dot and put the dot where I want the bullet to go.
There's nothing wrong with the AUG, you get a lot for your point buy in game, but it just feels weird to me and I accept that's a 'me' problem. I would still argue objectively that it should be compared to the G36 as it's ying / yang. The M4, whilst still over-priced at 5 points presently, is a very tidy package.
Yep, this actually nailed, it the sound really ruins it for me personally, if I want to run a supressor the aug is alright, I still feel the rof needs a very slight boost, then it'd pretty much be the perfect rifle.
