Mod.io speed limit?
Does mod.io have a speed limit? It feels like everything take way too long to download than it should.

Hey everyone I'm Scott from mod.io. We are looking into download speeds and will continue working to address this. It would be extremely helpful if you can help us debug by trying a few things:

In-game if the map download is slow, can you try downloading the exact same map via your web browser from https://insurgencysandstorm.mod.io and report if there was a speed difference.

Provide any helpful information you are comfortable sharing like your expected download speed, country and ISP.

For example:

- I just downloaded https://insurgencysandstorm.mod.io/operation-metro
- In-game I downloaded: 640mb @ 1meg/s it will take 20mins
- Web browser I downloaded: 640mb @ 10meg/s it will take 2mins.
- My max download speed is 10meg/s, on Steam I typically get 5meg/s.
- Comcast is my ISP.

You can email this information to support@mod.io or share what you'd like here if preferred.

Thanks!

Yeh at first I thought my internet was being slow. But it does seem that download speed is capped at like 2Mbps... I just gave up especially when some of the maps are close to 2GB. :NZA2_TombStone:

I never understand why devs decide to not use Steam Workshop.

That's an easy one, console release. They went with mod.io because it works with both consoles and PC, where Steam Workshop obviously doesn't.

Certainly not what I would have done, but that's why NWI did it.

Yea they need to drop mod.io probably not because it works for consoles they say. I have to keep redownloading mods I already downloaded it gets annoying and plus the slow download speed it makes it worse

The only time you will redownload a mod is when it has been updated by the developer. The servers I play on dropped a couple of the maps because they were updating multiple times a day. Hopefully when they get a little closer to finished they will get put back on.

Download speed for Mod.io depends on your ISP / Location as well as overall internet infrastructure. Currently, many providers are having to scale back on their download speeds due to increased usage during COVID-19.

Steam: https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/steam-is-latest-platform-to-change-downloads-in-light-of-covid-19-pandemic/
Sony: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-03-27-sony-reduces-psn-download-speeds-for-the-us
Netflix / YouTube: https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/v74nna/youtube-netflix-slowing-services-download-speeds-coronavirus

We're currently performing tests but expect the download speeds to be broadly similar to that of Steam Workshop.

One thing to note though is that map files in Sandstorm are a lot larger and more detailed and so downloading a map for Sandstorm will likely take longer than downloading a map for Insurgency (2014) or Day of Infamy.

Regarding why we chose mod.io

Mod.io is developed by the team at ModDB.com (one of the websites where the Insurgency Mod originated way back in the early 2000's) their system has far more functionality than Steam Workshop and will grow with new features over time, we think it is the best PC modding platform right now.

Additionally, it also allows a lot of flexibility for the future when considering multiple release platforms. Having mods on one central service is far more convenient for mod creators than having to upload and maintain mods across multiple platforms.

Certainly bizarre to have a Steam platform available, one that handles 10-20 million gamers according to the stats page, and then decide not to use it.

A platform instead that is probably run out of someone's basement is chosen. The modding space is already struggling with new games not supporting the practice, viewing it as competition for in game content stores.

That's one way to make mods dead on arrival I guess, but at least the box got checked.

I have pretty good internet speed. Its ONLY downloading from mod.io that is slow for me. So it cant be because of my internet because everything else works fine. What I mean is that something of similiar size takes way longer to download from mod.io than from most other places.

This fellow ^^^ has it right. In Texas we'd call it slower'n calf slobber on a cold morning. However, NWI prolly has little if any interest in download speeds for modders.

Nope, hell no. Mod.io doesn't give a damn about "ISP / Location". I have a very good and fast internet speed etc. I can pretty much download very large whole games from Steam a lot faster than the amount of time INS downloads stuff from Mod.io. Needless to say, this is a huge issue with bigger mods on mod.io It's going to take forever to download. This needs to be fixed ASAP. Especially since lots of mods are being updated regularly given their early stages, the game is in constant 'Downloading *insert map here'. Lot's of mods need to be unsubscribed from due to this and lot's of server drop these mods. It takes too damn long.
