AKM vs AK74

Why would anyone ever pick the 74 over the AKM? I have been playing for awhile I just can't see what advtantage the 74 has. It costs one more point, is a lower caliber, has more recoil, and less penetration.
The only thing I can think of is the higher rate of fire and slight boost of velocity.

AK-74 has less recoil and the higher rate of fire and less weight might make it slightly better for CQB but not by that much. The AKM is much better.

I have used mostly the AKM, but wanted to try the AK74 to see the difference. First of all, I have to say, even using the AKM, often it takes me more than one bullet to kill someone (I am talking on coop, so bots en masse), and sometimes that extra bullet can cost my life, if there are a large group emerging, so, not a fan of AKM. AK74 is weaker, but handles a very small amount better, per stats. Honestly, I don't find the tradeoff is worth the extra 1 point in gear. For stopping power, I think both are on the weak side- that's my opinion. The good part about the AKM is that it can equip 2-3 smokes in the underbarrel, which, tactically on coop can be powerful. I am level 82, I don't dominate, but I contribute to wins. I don't as of this time play too much pvp

I can swap between the two and not notice much of a difference. Honestly the AKM should be the one that cost the extra point.

I'd assume it would often take more than 1 bullet to kill with the AKM since it can't 1 shot kill lol

the rest is basically true though, AK74 has less recoil per shot so you can tap fire much more effectively IMO, when on full auto it's about the same since AKM has more recoil per shot but shoots slower and vice versa for AK74. Also at far ranges the AKM holds it's damage SLIGHTLY better than the AK74 so if it's a map with larger sight lines that might be worth considering. Typically I just use AKM since it's 1 point cheaper and generally I don't notice too much of a difference between them

AKM:

Contra: Slower round (bad for long distances), lower rate of fire (disadvantage in CQB), stronger recoil (bad for accurate aims especially on medium to long distance).

Pro: Better bullet penetration, cheaper.

Ak74:

Contra: Less penetration, one more point than AKM ( expensive )

Pro: Low recoil, faster round, higher rate of fire

Not sure if you are able to see it, but the AK74 outweighs the AKM by lengths!! The only real disadvantage in battle is the little worse bullet recoil. And one more point is a fair price to pay, the rifle is not expensive nor very cheap. It is pretty much in the middle.

I like to use both but definitely prefer the AK-74. This goes for ingame and real life. The AKM is a real pain in the a** to handle in real life, it feels very mechanics, has quite a punch, is not that accurate during shooting drills and the rounds are heavier, you gotta carry all that shi*e.

If you ask me, I would always choose the M4 assault rifle or the AKS74U.

There's no practical difference. They both require two hits to kill, they have equally good iron sights, same magazine capacity, AK-74 maybe has slightly smaller recoil. Personally, I play Insurgent rifleman a lot with this setup:

AK-74, no upgrades
M9, no upgrades
F1 frag x3
Heavy carrier
Gas mask,
No armor

Works like a charm.

Going by your logic, every assault rifle in this game is exactly the same.

From a practical standpoint, they are. Differences are minute and all of them take two hits to kill. Balistics pretty much don't matter, because 99% of firefights happen at < 100 meters and rifles have hitscan system on these distances.

Only differences are price, which also doesn't matter, because you have tons of points and rof, which MAY be disadvantage in some situations as you waste bullets.

Also, wallbanging is rare and battle rifles and MGs are more suited for that. But penetration stats are very similar for all assault rifles anyway
