Dota:
- More competitive
- Bad community
- Bigger ESports scene (potentially)
- Better graphics
- Original DotA inspired LoL, HoN etc.
- More difficult, but more rewarding
- COMPLETELY FREE
LoL:
- Very much Pay-To-Win at higher levels of gameplay
- More casual (from what I can gather)
- Distinctive art style
- Also a not great community
- Easier and with less punishment when you die
- Based on DotA (eg. gameplay and layout copied, some heroes and skills extremely similar if not the same, the boss 'Baron Nashor' is 'Roshan' spelt backwards)
Dota will be difficult in the beginning, as a new played going up against 'snowball' heroes such as Riki and Drow Ranger will make you miserable but try to either find some new friends to play with, ask a more experienced one to coach you or just practice on your own. I suggest completing all the training and then playing several bot matches with a hero before playing real people, and here are some hero suggestions for a new player:
Good:
- Dragon Knight
- Sven
- Tidehunter
- Drow Ranger
- Sniper
Bad:
- Riki
- Invoker
- Meepo
- Visage
- Io
- Pudge
Addendum: All of these games are pretty much based on the original Dota mod for WarCraft 3. The guy who made DotA Allstars, Guinsoo, is the guy that created League of Legends, and Baron Nashor is indeed Roshan backwards, as it is the name of his bowling ball.
For these reason I think that dota has a much larger learing curve. I believe that in general pub games, dota is also more competative, however I may just think that as I have played far more dota than I have LoL, and didn't really know what I was doing when playing LoL.
However you asked which game is 'better'. What I just listed are what I think the main differences are. If you like these, then you will prefer Dota, otherwise LoL might seem like a better game. It is worth keeping in mind that LoL has other maps that you can use, which I imagine is great fun. Conversely, any player can utilise any dota hero, while this is not the case in LoL.
It really goes down to what you think is more enjoyable game. Honestly I love Dota, but a thinking about playing some LoL. I would suggest for you to play some Dota, at least 10 games, and just decide which one you think is more fun (discounting the fact that you're more used to LoL).
I would still enjoy playing LoL, though. I also like its environment of the game especially the new Summoner's Rift remake (except the old SR). It's just that the game is not as optimized as Dota 2 which is why I can't play it normally.
To be honest I dont really care for the graphics as much as the next person (I belive league is getting a graphics overhaul (just saying)) but the competitive nature of the community scares me. Also Ill have to work to know some champs and where I fit in on the map (which person goes where, what lane Im in, what Im obligated to do, what Im not supposed to do ( EX: hooking a teammate as pudge (Ive done it before))). Also ive heard that the dota comunity hates the Lol comunity with a burning passion, so like heading into dota with a league mind set is like walking into a suicide head first.
I KNOW RIGHT! SOURCE 2! IM SO JELLY! Plus the reason why I first considered it was because of this news of the coming of the mother of HL3
Good luck :)
Thanks :D. and when im being pelted by insults by my teammates, ill remember that im just getting the worst of the batch :)
