Dota 2 slow launch, crashing, freezing
Hello

I have had some problems with my Dota 2 recently, including, as the titles suggests; Dota 2 taking several minutes to launch, the game randomly crashing, becoming unresponsives and sometimes just freezes where I can hear game sounds. The problems with slow launching has persisted for a few months and I kind of gave up on solving it since it wasn't anything game ruining for me, just a minor inconvenience. However, this week the game started crashing very frequently up to the point where i was assessed with abandons and given low priority punishment. When the game crashes or freezes and I close the game through the task manager, steam takes forever to launch Dota 2 (even longer than my expected 3~ minute launch time). This leads me to have to restart my computer in order to get in to the game without the opposing team unpausing.

I have tried all the suggested remedies I could find in the many posts about problems very similiar to mine but to no success. I have tried messing with the graphics settings in Dota 2 and in launch options; dx9 dx11, opengl, vulkan, autoconfig. I tried verifying game integrity, reinstalling Dota 2, reinstalling drivers, removing antivirus, overlays etc.

When nothing seemed to work I got so frustrated I completely wiped the drives of my computer and reinstalled Windows. With a fresh installation of windows, steam and dota I tried running Dota 2 again but the problems are still there, even when updating drivers again.

My computers specifications are: Intel Core i7 6700K 4.0 GHz 8MB Gigabyte Z170N WIFI Samsung 850-Series EVO 500G Samsung 850-Series EVO 1TB (where Dota is installed) be quiet! Pure Rock Corsair RM750x 750W Kingston HyperX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 2133MHz Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Gaming G1 Windows 10 HOME

I really do not know what to try next or even what could be causing this.

Any help is appreciated

Crashed in the menu two minutes after following the suggested actions. No luck with this either.

My last option : https://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=186033
If that doesn't works too, you can try to check & update your drivers once again.

I don't have AMD and I've already tried messing with directx and opengl settings

do not use borderless windows.(default settings)use exclusive mode only, alt tabbing while using borderless windows will corrupt your acceleration mouse curve.use windows tab instead.google driver booster to update device drivers.its free.

I have the same problem. I can maybe get one or two games crash free, but after that every little while (30 seconds to a couple minutes) the game just freezes entirely with sound playing.

Interestingly, the exact same thing also happened with Artifact (froze randomly with sound still playing, and if i waited long enough, it just came back on as if nothing had happened), but is not happening with any other games that I have played.

I have done fresh installs of my graphics drivers as well as a fresh install of Steam, dota 2, and artifact (on multiple hard drives). I have also run memory tests, verified that nothing is taking up a large amount of processing/memory/disk during the crashes, and verified that no temperatures in my pc are high.

The problem may even be related to Steam itself, as recently when I close steam, artifact, or dota 2, it takes up to 3 minutes for each to reopen (for no apparent reason).

specs are windows 10, gtx1060, 16gb ram

That is indeed very similar if not identical to some of my problems! I really hope this will be fixed soon, I have contacted steam support and I urge you to do the same to increase exposure of this issue.

Forego playing multiplayer unless its with a team of chums. Then you can enjoy the gaming no matter the outcome.

I may have found a potential temporary solution until they (hopefully) fix this issue. I had been using two monitors, and thought to try disconnecting/disabling my second monitor. It seems to have worked thus far -- I have had no crashes since doing so.

Hopefully this works for others.

Well done finding a temporary fix! Unfortunately I have only one monitor to my setup. Steam support has not found a solution as of yet, however, they are seemingly aware of the problem and said the the common denominator is nvidias GPUs (which honestly doesn't narrow the are down much since 74% of GPUs are nvidia).

Unfortunately the solution was in fact quite temporary -- it worked perfectly for one day on both games, then the next day started crashing as usual.
