For the running moves (in-game), clothesline has the wrestler continue to run with his arm out if it misses while the lariat has the wrestler stop in place.

There is post on this topic that has a lot of answers to this question.

lariats are generally big moves, like an exlamation point. clotheslines are regular attacks.

Ask Stan Hansen ;)

There is no real differnce aside from name. There's a lot of "lariats are this while clotheslines are that..." sort of stuff out there, but in practice it's mostly a naming thing...and the naming differences are mostly regional.

lariats - seems like a taxan thing for me. May be that's why many taxen wrestlers call clothline 'lariats' although JBL called it 'clothsline from hell'

Okay the reason I asked this question is because I want to know what to give my Dr. Death edit. The Clothesline or the Lariat?

Thanks.

IRL works like this:
Do you swing your entire arm to hit ? It's a lariat
Do your arm stays still to hit ? It's a Clothesline

This, I always understood Lariats to be that you followed through all the way.

In real wrestling terms, a clothesline acts like a clothesline in real life for clothes. It's an extended arm with little to no movement to take down a wrestler while running. A lariat is similar, but uses more force and intensity and commonly involves an arm wrapping motion around the opponent's head and neck area.

As for your edit question, clearly give your Dr. Death edit a LARIAT. Steve Williams was well known for his stiff strikes and destroying his opponents' necks with backdrops. A lariat is hardly farfetched when compared to that.
