After playing all Fire Pro installments since SNES days and only missing the Dreamcast part, I can already tell you that it won't ever get fixed even by a small bit. The hitboxes are worse than in old school beat 'em up games like Double Dragon or Streets of Rage. You basically need a pinpoint accuracy to hit an opponent with an attack, weapon strike or any running move. Unless the opponent is groggy or you Irish Whip them and run to the opposite ropes, there's no way you'll hit the opponent.
If you're even a milimeter above or below the "line" on which an opponent stands, you're going to miss. It's especially sad that it still haven't been made better after so many years of the series being on the market. This is the part where "old school" is simply going too far.
I will say that the MMA or whatever style it is guys seem to be much easier to strike with and are more striker/submission style so you can totally still have a good time striking by having SWA rules matches.
Lucky you. I've been with the series since SNES release of Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium (my family friend works in Japan since 1994) and he bought it for me. It was a problem of the series ever since I've played the above game for the first time.
The strike hitboxes are worse than in Double Dragon for example. That series is also 2D but the hitboxes are much better. You can be slightly above or below your opponent and still hit them.
Hitboxes in Fire Pro are pure evil! Be a milimetre off of the "line" on which your opponent stands on and you'll ALWAYS miss him.
It might've been easier if the environments would be 2D like the characters are, but they're 3D and it makes strikes even harder to line up correctly. Maybe, just maybe, if they would add some more realistic shadows it'd help to line up the strikes a tad bit easier.
