Which operating system are you using exactly? Also, which version of Proton do you use to play the game?

I've been playing simultaneously on Linux Mint (with Proton Experimental) and Windows 10. So far, both seem to work fine when I invite friends who are on Windows 7, 10 and 11.
If he's playing off the window's store and not steam and you're on steam you won't be able to play together.

same, no linux issues here playing with windows players (which is basically my whole friend list)
Operating system doesn't matter unless you've got an incredibly scuffed compatibility setup going on.

Make sure you're both on the Steam version OR both on the Microsoft Gamepass/Windows version, there isn't crossplay between the two store-fronts.
Might want to check other versions of proton through the compatibility tab (in game properties from Steam's library). IIRC, I had issues with getting MP going with DRG as well, until I switched it over for 'Proton 8.0-5'. I also had similar issues with Satisfactory (in the past).

Oof; I wasn't aware of another PC "port", but zero crossplay between the "ports" would definitely cause the issue (assuming the friend involved is indeed using the other "port"). (Which is to say: good point.)

Edit#2: is it me, or does joining a friend in DRG (steam edition) require use of the steam overlay? If so, make sure that works. (Steam overlay only manages 'friended' accounts from steam.)
I've played a few games where I host a match publicly and they join by finding my public lobby. It's surprisingly reliable so long as you're actively coordinating. Randoms will be able to join if you do this.

Edit: You could exclude randoms by having a password! (I've never used the password feature. I only remembered it because there's a tick box for including/excluding that in the server room search bar.)

that's a you problem.
I use arch (btw) and my friends can play.
my gf uses win11 and can play.
so can my friend who uses win10.
both simultaneously. I'm even designated "the one who hosts the games" because of how smooth and reliable my connections are.

The technical reason is because the two versions use different multiplayer networking APIs.
Steam version uses Steamworks API; Windows Store version uses Xbox Live API.

In theory, that should mean the Windows Store and Xbox versions of the game can cross-play with each other, since they both use the Xbox Live API, but that would be it.

Microsoft store version uses a Xbox port (even on PC), which is downgraded from the Steam version with gameplay changes that makes it incompatible for playing with people using Steam versions.
I play with someone who is on Windows 11 nearly everyday as I'm hosting the game on the Linux PC.
