Also, the clan is self-sufficient when at the settlement (basically their hunger/thirst/sleep stats are frozen). They only need help eating and drinking when you take them out in the field.
IMHO the only time you should be travelling with your clan is when moving from one settlement location to another.
But I did have the mimic and group preservation neurons locked first.
That really increases their survival rates by quite a bit.
Only benefit I see is increased Intimidation power.
The way combat works means a group is almost never more powerful than a single primate IMHO.
And you can also give them bleed/poison prevention if you find the right stuff ground level. That's where mimic comes in to patch up the whole group at once. It's good for herding.
One useful thing is I got a nice inventory stash. Just let every ape carry a spear, one with a cutter, and I can just grab a new spear straight after attacking. And cut new weapons at the next base.
