I have a theory that Fran Bow is a stealth prequel to Dusk and that Duskman was Fran's childhood friend and lover. Nowadays after the events of that game, he's an Argent energy fuelled, Marathon 2 style duel shotty packing man and a half, trained by Solaris and the Crawling Chaos herself the one in Dusk is actually Remor stealing Nyarlathotep's identity and out for blood. Namely both Remor's and the other antagonist's in Fran Bow. The read is laughable and interesting all at once:

From playing this game (on GOG, just got the Steam one), Dusk, and being off my own meds which don't seem to actually work for a couple of nights while playing the game, I came up with something based on mostly coincidences that I read too much into (but damn do I still believe it anyway as such theories are sort of my thing):

Fran Bow may be a stealth prequel to DUSK. When you finish laughing, read/listen to the rest.

Be aware of spoilers for both games.

Duskman goes to the titular town to steal its treasures buried under it but who's to say that's just what he told people? He could really be a childhood friend or even lover of Fran who learned what really happened to her, knew she's OK, learns from Solaris and the Crawling Chaos Nyarlathotep that Remor, Dr Oswald and Aunt Grace are still alive/still at large.

As for the asylum, well. before tracking Remor and his cult to Dusk, the asylum is Duskman's first target: he breaks in and slaughters all the adults who gave Fran trouble after torturing them for information (in a raspy, German accented May Payne esque demonic voice) and freeing the other children imprisoned there, not caring if they are dangerous or not as it isn't his concern. Then he burns the place to ashes. The staff both dead and spared are freaking terrified of him and try to flee at his sight, but like the Doom Slayer, Duskman cannot be stopped. Gladus (or however it's spelled, the evil nurse at the start) and the pedophile security guard Duskman takes great pleasure in killing.

The Nyarlathotep you fight at the end of DUSK is not the real Crawling Chaos: it's Remor, having stolen her identity. His form is based on one of Nyaruko's real forms, but he gets some parts wrong so you can tell it isn't Nyaruko: e.g. Nyaruko's form has a big radula tongue like squid have, but Remor's copy form has a lamprey eel mouth, as you see in the game. The Crawling Chaos also has many more tentacles whereas Remor's copy form has some tentacle shaped vestigial arms he attacks with. Nyarlathotep also has very dark grey and black skin and chitin whereas Remor's copy form is colored to resemble mummified human flesh. The Mama boss in the Escher Labs Max Payne blood abyss is a cyborg Aunt Grace, presumably made into one when she nearly died after being cast into the abyss by Itward for what she & Oswald did to Fran, and Jakob is Oswald himself with a new body, granted by Remor to stand a chance against Duskman.

The latter of episode 2 and all of episode 3 take place in the 5th Reality. More surreal parts of the grounded in reality levels, such as the aforementioned Nightmare Blood Abyss appearing elsewhere could be Duskman perceiving the Ultrareality while hopped up on painkillers and Duotine after every fight.

Duskman is put through training by Solaris and the Crawling Chaos in the Duat and Astral Plane, fed a huge amount of Argent energy, making him into a scarred, armourless version of the Doom Slayer. Then he's given a trenchcoat and hat based on Vladimir Tepes (Alucard from Hellsing) and Caleb at his request. The Argent energy rapidly matures him, and he is sent back to the Third Reality, armed with a pair of WSTE Shotguns, sickles and a cigar in his mouth, intending to hunt down Remor's cult to destroy them and kill their god as revenge for daring to harm his beloved and her cat.

When Remor as the Fake Nyarlathotep detains Duskman in Oswald/Jakob's place at the ending of DUSK, what I think happens offscreen (because DUSK's ending sucks) is the real Nyarlathotep saves him and gives him a giant a.ss fire hose to cleanse Remor. He is then free to go, but Nyarlathotep offers him the chance to use her power under Dusk for her own purposes, just without all the more blatant evildoing and human sacrifices Remor exploited. Namely hiring him as an on-call agent for the SDA. Duskman agrees then teleports to Ithersta to reunite with Fran.

Also, that house in the Episode 3 level Homecoming? The floating islands one with the Shadow the Hedgehog gravity mechanic? The one Duskman recognises and using the paintings makes him say it "hurts too much to remember"? That's the Bow-Dagenhart household, or at least how Duskman remembers it so the scenery is a bit different. Duskman is remembering his childhood sweetheart who he is going through this all for, as well as memories of her disappearance, faked news of her death, and Remor murdering her parents. I may as well reveal a potential name for Duskman, like the two potential ones Doomguy* has: Duskman's real name as revealed by either a potential fanfic or potential DUSK mod based on this theory is Max Cross.


Dr Oswald/Jakob probably made sure this part of the world appeared to Duskman to mock him further, especially as Oswald failed both to use her as a sacrifice/test subject for his 5 dimensional perception research, and he failed to kill Mr Midnight to make her cave to him in the end. That makes Duskman killing him and making his cult turn against him in the final boss fight all the more satisfying.

I think it makes sense even though it's crazy. Either way, it's great fanfic fuel for anyone who wishes to use this theory. That includes mods for DUSK when it supports them and of course, fan art.

Just in case this idea is laughably offensive as opposed to simply laughable and comes off as a joke or troll post (which it's not), remember this little ditty: If you're wondering how makes chronological sense, and other simple facts (fa la la!), repeat to yourself "It's just a game theory, I should try to just relax".

That's the power of game theories: coupled with sleep deprivation, vague coincidences and lack of medication, you can pretty much read into anything many different ways. The Marathon trilogy for example is rife with that and there's a whole fansite dedicated to that purpose.
