Absolutely bonkers. It's always been so, but I still can't believe my eyes after the graphical revamp they did in May. The game is incredibly beautiful, fluid like crazy (I got this weird feeling of having more than 60 FPS, on a 60Hz monitor) and thrilling as hell.
In the first environment, you will discover how technical and precise you have to be in order to try and do the best times/rankings. In the last ones, you can't care about that: the tracks are so hard, yet actually possible to do with training, making them incredibly fun.
Oh and by the way, the music is beautiful.
I deem the amount of different ships and all the liveries/colors to be absolutely enough. The cash needed to buy them is collected fairly rapidly, you won't have the feeling to go on an endless grind. Just do the career mode, even rush it, you'll have all the money you need.

As for the DLC: buy it. Driving the track in Class IV is the most breathtaking experience I have ever had in a driving game, and god know I played many. As for the music, the choice to make it instrumental-only is well done: it makes for epic races.

So, yeah, absolute thumbs up, this game deserves far more success than it's got as of right now.

If you are buying this game for the VR, the VR is broken at the moment. To get VR to work, you have to go to your steam Library, Right click Redout, Click Properties, then click BETA tab, and type the following into the ''Enter Beta Access code'' tab : redoutvredition
After that your game will have a 5GB update then work with VR.
Leaving this here for my self so i don't have to trawl the internet finding how to fix it in the future.

A great modern take on high-speed racing. Also there is a track named Hydro Thunder.

Despite the review being negative: I love this game. It's one of the best futuristic AG racers out there you can get on PC. The reason for the negative review though? Well, 6 years after release and 4 years after the last update, an update (good) that forces you to link to EGS if you want to play online (bad) was pushed to the game.

Besides the reports of the update causing crashing and performance issues for various users who have been playing this game for years, they also dropped VR support while still leaving "VR Supported" on their store page, even mentioning it in the game description as a key feature.

You can get VR support working again by opting in to the Beta branch with the password "redoutvredition" to rollback the patch, but I had to go digging in to the discussions for the game to even find this out - there's no mention of it on the store page or in the game itself.

This was a great game that now epitomises everything wrong with the patch culture of modern gaming: There's no guarantee that the game you actually spend your money on will be the game you eventually end up with. By all means, provide fixes and QoL updates - but actually removing features you advertise in the product description? Adding in requirements post-release to hand over personal details to a third-party company, especially one as unpopular on Steam as EGS, to continue using features that worked fine already? It's like the modern day equivalant of EA trying to kill the preowned market for games by locking multiplayer behind a DLC code, except now you're expected to hand over your personal information to Tim Sweeney and Tencent.

EGS is encouraging Epic accounts to try and drag steam players in to an ecosystem they never wanted to be a part of, and it's a huge negative to see developers/publishers either complicit with this or just completely ignorant of it - I'd rather not have crossplay and be limited to multiplayer with other steam users than be forced to join a service I don't want to just to play.

Why not do what some other games do and release a separate VR version to run in your library? Or bundle both under the same SKU and use a launcher to pick between the two? Right now your only options are to play with the patch or without the patch, and you have to swap the versions in game properties and enter the Beta password whenever you want to switch to the VR version.

Why is giving choice to people over VR and EGS locked behind a password that isn't immediately given to the user a thing in the first place?

this game is what happens when Wipeout fans get so fed up with waiting for a new game, they make their own, except it's even better, faster and crazier than the actual game it's a spiritual successor to.

-Pros-

- This game is beautiful!

- This game is fast paced, sometimes it's even hard to see what you're doing or what's going on XD .

- This game provides a decent challenge that will keep you coming back for more.

- Plenty of tracks to choose from, they also are themed to a specific planet and are VERY well designed.

- Split screen local multiplayer, but only limited to 2 players.

- Online works rather well, there's no lag between other players that's immediately noticeable.

-Neither-

- Your ship handles like it dances on ice, I know that the developers are trying to make the physics more realistic in that a hover ship isn't going to grab the ground very well. This is in the "Neither" category because it is both a con and a pro. It sucks to have to constantly fight your ship to keep it on the track, but it's also realistic and provides a real challenge. This is here just to INFORM others that your ship feels like it's on ice constantly.

-Cons-

- This game will make you rage if you aren't a calm person. Some of these tracks are specifically designed to throw you off the track just to kill you. Got a tight turn coming up? Yeah lets just get rid of the guarding rail so that you fling off and die just to remind you that you haven't memorized this track yet. Now this isn't true for EVERY track, but there are some in this game that have turns that are there just to upset you is you aren't paying attention or have yet to play that track.

- Not a lot of ships to choose from, there are four tiers of each though. This honeslty isn't a huge gripe as you'll probably be able to find one that you like, but there is a desire to be able to choose from more ships.

*** There really isn't any penaltly for slamming into the walls / guard railing on turns. If you try to drive / fly cleanly on a track, you will get a worse time than those that are slamming into the wall going 1200+ kmh. You can learn how to drift, but you have to know how to drift each turn for each track and have it memorized which takes a very long time and a lot of practice (Isn't very friendly for noobs or casual players). There should be either more of a health penalty for hitting walls instead of just taking "Some" health away or there should be a much greating speed penalty for hitting walls. ***

- The controls aren't very self explanatory to those that haven't played these types of games before. You will learn them eventually, but it might make you frustrated at first.

This recommendation comes with a big caveat - if you want to have some fun with high-speed futuristic racing, but aren't interested in mastering the tracks and replaying races over and over to improve, then this game is only good for around 10 hours. Beyond that mark the game ramps up difficulty significantly, both with the introduction of highly technical tracks and boosting the AI's capabilities. To me, it made the game switch from a joyous, adrenaline-pumping experience, to a disappointing, frustrating one in just a few races of the career mode.

So if you like what you see, probably read some more about the game before you buy it, and don't assume you'll be able to complete it. Watching other people's gameplay doesn't really give you any more understanding of how technical and difficult this game becomes after you reach Class 3 (out of 4!) in the career mode, so probably don't base your judgment on that either. I'd say get this on a sale, and enjoy it while it lasts - it really is pretty fun for the first few hours, and tough but still fun for another few hours in Class 2.

Wow.

This game is fantastic. Blistering speed, responsive controls, smooooooth performance. If you're like me, and looking for a new F-Zero or Xtreme G or something like that, this'll scratch that itch and then some.

Redout delivers mind-bending rollercoaster tracks, narrow courses, lots of speed & lots of jumps! It's a polished, psychedelic arcade racer on steroids that offers a wealth of varied content, plus a load of stuff to unlock.

I was impressed by the precise multi-directional control scheme, although it took me quite some time to get used to and I still inevitably hit many walls! Unlike most racers, where you only control your turning, you also control the pitch & strafe axes. By combining these directions at the right moments, you keep your craft hugging the track, land huge jumps & maximise your velocity through the corners to line up the next boost. It takes some skill & a lot of practice to get used to the slippery feel of the anti-grav crafts, but in-turn, offers a more rewarding experience when you do nail it!

Learning the tracks helps a bunch too as many corners you simply cannot see coming & besides that, many tracks are long & complex; Redout can certainly challenge you more than the average. It would have been good to see some tracks with wider berths to allow a bit more 'drifting feel' & little less wall riding in parts, but overall I've enjoyed the gravity defying designs.

Craft motor sounds, & some environment effects could be beefed up. More audio status updates/feedback during the race would have been nice, but these are made up for by the particularly standout musical score. It puts you in the zone; getting you as pumped as hearing the almighty 'whoooosh' sound when you hit multiple speed pads & boosts rocketing towards breaking the sound barrier!

DLC packs continue to expand the track roster with some fresh themed locations & can be enjoyed by anyone in an online event as long as the host has purchased. This is a strong positive to the multiplayer component. As is broadcasting to the player how many other are playing online at any given time. It is so nice to have a game not showing me that ominous & anger inducing "waiting for players" screen. This is front & centre on the main screen, encouraging players to join & contributing to the ongoing multiplayer activity well after release.

The AI difficulty in the extensive career mode can be wildly inconsistent. Some tracks will be a breeze, where others can be so unforgiving that one mistake will have you going straight for the restart. This may frustrate players, but I found it refreshing not to have predicable outcomes. Thankfully, if you do get stuck unable to get a medal, you generally will have a larger pool of non-linear class races to help you continue to progress.

You can upgrade your craft with credits earned & revisit the hard tracks later. Different craft with unique handling/advantages can also be bought which often can make all the difference in getting that win, or crash'n'burnin’! The active/passive power-ups I found to be underwhelming. The effects of these can feel minor & sometimes the choice seems solely determined by the track/craft/race type. A wider range of offensive/defensive modules would have been welcome to complement the speed/handling ones.

Leaning more towards hardcore than casual, Redout is a fast & intense racer that can be unforgiving at times yet challenging, rewarding your persistence. Ultimately leaving me with just one thing to say..
