Their was some talk in the past of a possible sequel/upgrade. Haven't seen anything since then. Anyone have any more recent information?

Good question.

I'd like to know more too, especially since what was said in our forum about ideas for a possible successor sounded pretty good.:Sion:

I know this much:

Draginol (aka Brad Wardell is the Founder, CEO & President of Stardock) said on November 15 in the Ashes forum in the thread: Ashes II is coming! Lets show some love for the devs!

"We have three sequel games in development. Ashes II is in preproduction. GC4 is in development and we have a sequel to another game that people having been asking for that should be announced in the next few months..."

With Galactic Civilization IV now patched to version 1.05 in EGS, perhaps this means that Stardock developers are now working more intensively on Ashes II and that development of the game is now moving ahead more quickly. :spazdunno:

As for the mysterious 3rd game:

Ironclad is working on something with Stardock, maybe that's what Draginol was referring to?

Fyst on 27 March:

"Thanks Sand Witch. We (Ironclad) are still in business and we are very busy working on something with Stardock."

Maybe it's Sins 2. I don't know, but maybe Stardock's developers are still primarily focusing their work on Ashes II. Who knows? Anything is fine with me, as long as the devs work. I buy almost all their games anyway. :spazdunno:

By the way, it could be that Ashes II and the theoretically possible Sins II will also go to EGS first. That's not ideal for us, but if it's better for Stardock's finances, that's fine with me. :Albus:

Galactic Civilizations IV came as a complete surprise to me at EGS. GC IV, however, is already out of Early Access but still not available to buy on Steam. It doesn't even have a store page yet. So maybe Ashes II won't be available on Steam after release. Below you will find the most interesting statements of the devs for you, so that we have everything in one place and the fans don't have to search the forum so long until there's something new. It all sounds really good, I think. Stardock's ambition is really great!:Sion::Irene:

It is still very early. But it will be using Cider which is based on Nitrous (which is what Ashes was built with).

That means:
1. Lua-based gameplay and modding
2. Asset streaming
3. Multi-platform (Windows, Linux at the very least -- we ported our engine to Linux largely due to demand for a Linux version of Ashes)

The biggest limiting factors on Ashes I were:
A. There were places where it was unintentionally optimized for 2 factions (i.e. a BOOL used). This wasn't originally thought to be that big a deal until we got into making the expansion that was going to add the third faction.

B. GPU memory. The way assets were stored to support DirectX 12 back in the day (think DX12 prototype at the time) creates a lot of problems for adding more units. We've solved this since but backporting it to Ashes would be very expensive and time consuming.

C. The UI tech. The UI system in Ashes is pretty basic. We've since (see Star Control: Origins) built a new system that is resolution independent and looks nice. But would be hard to backport.

D. Hard to mod. Everything is in optimized C++ as opposed to scripted because when the game was made (2015ish) the hardware requirements were on the outer edge of what was viable. Now, of course, we live in a world where many of you reading this have 6, 8 or more cores in your PC. Our next-gen games use multithreaded Lua so it's a lot easier to mod.

So the good news is that the tech basis for Ashes II is there. The bad news is that we have 3 other games ahead of it so it's going to be awhile.

If I had a few more engineering people available, I'd put out an Ashes II prototype so at least people could start playing around with the tech (i.e. modders could port SupCom to it for instance if they wanted, that's how moddable it is).

BTW, if you know anyone with a CS degree who wants to work in the game industry, send them our way. :)

"On the subject of Ashes II being something TA/SupCom fans will enjoy. The design for Ashes I was very much a hybrid of TA, CoH and Sins. However, Ashes II will be closer to TA/SupCom in style with a commander unit. This is something we have talked about internally quite a bit. We are also planning on a minimum of 3 factions for Ashes II on launch.

Now I must stress all of this is subject to change but I'd just thought I'd share those with you guys. We already have walking units working in the engine as well, something you guys will see very soon in fact ;)"

Most of the team is working on another game that will get announced in the next 3 weeks.

But Ashes II is in pre-production.

Giant robots? I think I'm gonna cry. I love my giant robots. Please I hope its not a joke.

Still remember Universe at war and supreme commander.

I will never understand with the asian market, why the DEV do not make a good RTS based on Gundam or Macross/Robotech. The is at least a billion people who are in love with giant robots and the only thing we get are Super deform games...

Cool showcase for Universe at war, still an amazing game for the time;

I'm not engaging with the Twitter but if we're tallying feedback, throw my vote into that already heaping pile for a Sins follow-up.

In my view, it's one of the few RTS's in the last 15 years that actually did manage to innovate in some interesting ways and ended up being a solid and accessible game in its own right - something I had no trouble selling to my friends. It still makes the regular rotation of multiplayer games that we load up to this day and I'd love to see that formula improved and expanded.
