Has anyone made a bartering guide?
I am thinking about putting something together to work out how to make the most of the bartering and trading systems.

I am thinking of gathering data in a spreadsheet detailing buy/sell prices per day and barter point values per citizen type, then using that to work out what some good chains are for making money or getting an early stockpile of certain goods.

Has anyone already started this? I've seen some basic hints about how powerful yhe barter system is, and I know the knowledge is out there. But I'm in love with this game and I can't help wanting to rise to the challenge it presents.

Are you sure? The prices value changes every day plus it's dependent on your reputation.
Bartering is constant, except the kinds in the Notkin's castle.

If a guide like that ever existed, I'd personally never use it. It would drag me out of the game way too much, in my opinion.

On the other hand, for the sake of research and categorisation, that would be quite nice to have and it would be a fine addition to the Patho. wiki.

Oh I'd probably just produce a TLDR summary of optimal trades for easy digestion rather than encourage people to nerd out on the spreadsheet.

Like, right now I know on Day 1 I can trade peanuts and fishing hooks to kids for immunity boosters, and I'm pretty sure thats a huge profit whether I sell the pills to vendors for now, or hang on to them for later.

But I still wind up carrying stuff I can't find anyone to barter with, not having the right items to get a trade done, and then having a full inventory because I'm not sure what to carry and what to store.

It might have some "academic" interest or be a funny thing to try to maximize, but using it would mean that you're essentially not playing the game. Discovering the subtleties of the bartering system by yourself is part of the game. Learn the the ways of the town and make connections.

Yeah, someone on the discord (the community one, not the official one) made a pretty comprehensive guide to the items each NPC carries and such. I don't think they did anything with buy/sell prices though. Also don't know if they've posted it anywhere outside of the discord.

I know that soap is cool because you can sell it for about 110 and some npcs will give you dried meat for 2 pieces of soap.

Well... BARTERING SYSTEM... it is quite extensive. So, i never did the full sistem. Just some obvious thingy:
nuts - to small childrens.
dangerous thingy (razors\needles) - to teenager:)
lockpick - to guards:)
water - to alcoholic (with hangover):)
lubri... khm... i mean soap - to female:)
land - to peasants, factories - to workers:)......... etc

Pretty funny sistem. May be you can find some guide. But it's not critical. Because you cant really use it anyway. Drop are - random. And "the time is of the essence". Usually - you cant waste it for searching specific thingy for a specific NPC (with some exceptions).

______________

TRADING SISTEM easier, and have a clear logic. More fear - higher price. First day - common folks don't know about plague. Price for all goads is low. Best day for shopping (don't hold your money).

But with every next day the situation will be worse. More fear - money is no longer valued. WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS:
- If people get some hope - prices is lower. For example when inquisitor comes (and trying solve the problem) - another good day for shopping (except food). But the next day - people see what nothing changes - and prices goes up again. Same story with general and army. Atleast it was in P1 (not fully explored P2 yet - but for now all looks same... except "inquisitor food coupons").

So, tactic is simple. day 1-3 - spend the money (earlier - better).
Then - hold the money, and sell all (not critical things), because price is high and you can get a good capital - till inquisitor comes.

Then - again spend all money. Next day - again hold money till general comes.

Hmmm... i think i could miss one more "hope day".... like there were three... or maybe they've changed it. Better check it...

Bin scavenging has a set item list, so I wouldn't call it random. My early findings have been that scavenged loot (effectively free) can be traded up for specific items. Eggs are a good example. 2x Marbles for an egg. Nuts and a fishing hook for an egg. I wound up with half a dozen eggs. But nobody wants eggs from you in barter so either you sell them (96 gold to sell on day 1, 120 to purchase) or use them as a good food source. Plenty of kids carrying eggs.

I also managed to get worn shoes from the girl in Notkin's place for 5x broken scissors.

But there are limits because many items just don't have a way to get them cheaply. Stuff like straight razors can only be traded at a loss because if you need them, the only alternatives are going to cost much more.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

This is excellent, thank you. Very well laid out and organised. I can probably update a lot of the wiki with this kind of information. It's missing item details and there are no entries for shops yet.

The tables are fragmented, just the best on bartering values so far.
There's better guides on food and tinctures, just look at the Steam guides page.

The prices value changes every day - yep (agreed). But it's not random. You can do a chart for this, if you want. It will be something like :

.........../..\../
..../\..../....\/
.../..\../............................................../|\
../....\/................................................| price for one meat piece (for example)
./.......................................................|
____________________________.|
|day1.............day 12
(not real chart - just example)
And this chart will be same for a every game (and every heroes, at least it was in P1).
Your reputation may affect discounts, but not the main chart. High reputation or low but the best price, anyway, will be in a first day, e.t.c (by chart). But you dont need to remember all chart only few days (with highest and lowest price).

Actually they made "inquisitor food coupon" mechanics (in P2) - to break this system. Because in P1 if you know this system - you havent problem with goods (at all). Now system works not so good, but still very helpfull.

It's easier - because you can foresee this (and control yours action about it). Barter are always random. Especially in the last days (when much harder find NPC for this). You can find good deal (item drop) or not. Ofcourse you can use "magical-2-handed-save-load-of-the-rage". But it can take a few hours of real time.

Bartering prices ain't random either. The only random is the item stock, but this rule valid for the shops, too. The item preferences by specific NPC is constant, too, and the shops work by the same rules, but a top of this they are affected by reputation and specific day modifiers. Moreover the item stock is changing for the shops throughout the game while remain the same for the bartering, except Notkin's castle.

In any case you are completely off the mark. The initial question was the chart of item prices and not an availability of the NPCs. And marking all the 12 days constant values is easier than calculating a price with 3 additional floating modifiers. Which is exactly what happened with the tutorial above, - the bartering was cracked down, while the shops are still "work in progress".

Sorry me. Must be I put it wrong... I wont say that barter-price is random (only barter system). Ok... let see some situation. For example:

You need some medicine. You can buy it. Or you can barter it.

1) For buying you need only money. And the shops are always open (no matter of situation in a district). And you always know where they are (shops). And you can plan a route from a morning. = save a time (most valuable resource in a game) for important quests.

2) For bartering you need a "specific trinkets" - for a "specific people". That mean you must:
- find this specific trinkets (drop are random) you can find it or not. You can find a lots of nuts, or a lots of gear.
- find this specific people (same - random) you can find a lot of teenage-girls (they can have medicine), or you can find a lot of boys (they havnt medicine). Or you can not find they at all because yours quest bring you in the district with plague\criminals.
(in a last days 90% of the city will be covered with plague and criminals. And you cant spend a time for a running to another side of the city - just for a small chance for barter).
= to much random in this sistem.

I DIDN'T say that you you must forget about barter. Use it, ofcourse. Just... trading system(if you know how to use it) - give you a solid chance for survival. And bartering - it's a good bonus to this (just its random - luck or not, and it takes a lot of time, and its almost impossible in the end).
________________________

P.S. just checked reputation-system. For now it looks broken (does not affect price, only on possibility for trading\barter). + even if it will works, it doesnt change a lot. For example:

Price for a morphine (real from a game) - selling (you selling to a shop, any shop):

day:.......1......2.......3.......4.......5........6.........7........8........9
price:....90....144...181...181...271...271.....181....144.....271

Yep... a bit changes form a part 1, but still, you can get a good money:

hold in a first 2 days \ sell in a day 5-6.
hold in a day 7-8 \ sell in a day 9. = proffit. Same (same system, not the price) with the other goods (except food coupons).

Even if you have a discount in a 10% (for example) - it doesnt change anything, because difference in a price can be 300% = your discount will not cover this.
________________________

P.P.S. - i'm cant say for another heroes (for now we have only Burah) but in P1 - price system was the same for any characters. + i didn't checked a new game (in P1 it doesnt affect trading system - it would be stupid) But even if it does - you can use it anyway just be more cautious.
