Bulletstorm is a narrative masterpiece that dares asking important philosophical questions, such as “should I shoot this guy in the nuts before shooting him the head?”, “wouldn’t it be cool to take control of a giant animatronic laser-firing dinosaur?” or “how many curse words can you cram in an FPS campaign?”

Seriously though, this whole game revolves around cool crap. Every minute is dedicated to stuff that is guaranteed to fill your inner 10 years-old boy with murderous glee: ruined landscapes, angry kaijus, foul-mouthed military guys, giant machines, cyborg buddies, stupidly awesome weapons, testosterone-poisoned punk warriors… All of which are guaranteed to explode at one point or another! It helps that Bulletstorm still looks pretty gorgeous to this day (safe for the facial animations).

The aesthetic is not the only awesome thing though, as the game essentially plays like the missing link between Gears of War and Ultrakill. Yes, it has the same typical linear level design, auto-regenerating health, three weapons limit, QTES and AI-controlled squadmates as every early-2010s shooter, which is (arguably) unfortunate. And yes, there is a tiny bit of jank here and there, and design elements that are somewhat off – the sprint and reload keys that double as vault over/interact, the teammates that get in front of your shots, the slightly weird ways some of the guns work... But it’s otherwise so good that I quickly stopped caring about that, instead marveling at the beautiful gunplay.

The surprisingly smart and innovative “skillshot” mechanic encourages you to constantly explore new ways to rain death and destruction upon your enemies, making split-second decisions and exploiting all guns and environmental hazards to their full potential. The more twisted and creative the kill, the more points you get… And it’s incredibly satisfying and addictive. I find myself replaying individual levels over and over again, just for the sake of coming up with new spectacular murder techniques.

In short, Bulletstorm was a very fun and innovative game. It was made with passion and talent, really stood out in an otherwise saturated market, and was a breath of fresh air its era absolutely needed. So it’s only logical that it didn’t sell well and ends on a cliffhanger teasing a sequel we’re unlikely to ever get. Good news is: it’s still as fun a romp as ever and has good replayability. You should probably have a go at it.

While there's a lot to say about this game, there's also not much to it in general.

After you boot it up, you'll be greeted by the most insane and childish antiheros that have ever graced the gaming landscape. Foul mouthed, untrustworthy, crass, and completely inappropriate all the way. It sucks you in and gets you hooked on its simple yet exciting spectacle of violence. While the gameplay itself isn't anything groundbreaking, the introduction of kicking and anti-gravity whips in addition to a scoring system make for a stupefyingly satisfying experience.

The setpieces are astoundingly varied and introduce new concepts at a breakneck pace.
- Become mortal enemies with Godzilla
- Get drunk and blow up enemies on a dance floor
- Get chased by a giant wheel
- Engage in a shootout on a set of miniature buildings
- Play the-floor-is-lava with the ceiling
- Escape a sideways building
- Kill the biggest weed you've ever seen
- Blow up the biggest dam ever
- Catch a plane you don't have a ticket to
- Befriend a giant robot
- Make a significant reduction in the population of the galaxy by the end.

It's a lot of good fun that pulls you in and gets you experimenting while looking to see what comes next.
It doesn't overstay its welcome, it doesn't get too distracted with setpieces, and the campaign has just enough payoff to make the resolution somewhat satisfying.

It's not perfect, and the enemies are very samey with little variety. The overwhelming majority are guy with stick, guy with gun, big guy with big gun, or wily dude with rifle. Sometimes there's a big areal enemy, but there aren't many more things in the game to worry about.

It's not winning any 'best games of all time' awards, but everything here is solid.
It's not trying to knock your socks off or get into your head, it gives exactly what it says on the tin: a fun experience.
It certainly is fun - which is something that is sorely illusive in today's market.
In a world filled with giant games that demand hundreds or thousands of hours, tons of grinding, paywalls, copy/pase content, boring characters, reused assets, or dry gameplay - Bulletstorm is an ever-enduring example of something simple and good.

It's straight up fun - the smack talk and unbearably moronic kinship between the loser characters mixed with the bombastic ultra-violence of the combat and the juiciness therin, it's certainly worth a place in your library.

Bulletstorm is a Very Good game.
It doesn't pull any tricks or try to be anything more than what it is, what it does so well: to be a satisfying adventure with grit, violence, humor, and bliss. It's simple fun, and there's not much more anything has to be.

I can shoot someone in the balls and be rewarded for it.

Despite its age, this is worth playing. Story and characters and nothing of note but the gameplay loop is pretty consistent and stays enjoyable from start to finish. A really solid single player campaign based shooter.
