The reason you're not doing that well is actually very simple: You're trying to use level 1 gear at level 10. After around 3 levels or so, weapons will reduce in damage. That measns that if a gun is underleveled, it will basically tickle enemys, no matter the damage on the card.
Literally every gun you will find after the gearbox sniper will be/is better. Every one. Don't forget your shield. They help greatly with survivibility.
Don't worry about buying guns. Honestly, the vendors should never be used. Just fight through some areas, pick up weapons that enemies drop, and open weapon chests.
I'm sorry that i cant help you more, but thats honestly the only issue. Your gear is just really freaking underleveled, and you NEED to get another one, as close to your current level as possible
Zer0 is the most fragile. Potentially, he also can do the most damage, but it takes a bit of work.
Axton, Maya, Gaige and Salvador are all easier to play and are all more resilient.
Second: The way this game is built, damage scaling is very steep, and is based on level disparity. If you are trying to do the main quest, and completely ignoring the side quests, then you will be under-leveled, and you will die, a lot.
Third, yes, this game does actually require you, the player to have some skill and knowledge. It's not "easy". However, those are skills you can learn. You can learn how enemies behave, you can learn how and when to dodge, how to react to the different situations in the game, and you can improve. The fact that the game has some initial difficulty is a good thing, it means it's got some depth to it.
So ... practice, observe, and yes, you will get better at it.
Also, be aware, you can't tank anything. Shields aren't there to allow you to blithely ignore incoming fire. Shields are there to give you a warning that you need to seek cover, or dodge, or otherwise react. (There are classes and situations where you can be "tankier" but those are rarer, and it's best to learn the game without expecting to be able to do that).
The Gearbox guns are awful, there's no reason to use those past Liar's Berg. If you haven't found anything better than that then first off: You didn't do Bad Hair Day, because the reward for that is a level 4 Sniper which is vastly superior to the Gearbox sniper. (If you did do it, but turned it in to Claptrap instead, well... then you're stuck). That also means you're not checking the weapon machines regularly. There's one in Three Horns Divide, there's two in Sanctuary (one outside the Crimson Raiders headquarters, and the other is Marcus himself). Go look at those. Yes, most of the guns in them will be "white" quality, but they're still an upgrade over that Gearbox gun.
If you want to keep playing Zer0, then get yourself a Survivor Class Mod.
Bottom line: The game has resources and help for you that you're not utilizing. Ask, give us more detail about what you're having issues with. Most of the forum regulars will be happy to offer advice.
But, like any of the toons, you need to learn the game's basics first.
Zer0 is a bad toon to continue playing if you are currently having trouble with him. His skill trees focus on damage, little on healing. He's tricky to play until you "get" him. From your description, there is more you are having trouble with than your toon.
All the toons play pretty similarly in the first play through, even into the second. This is the time to learn the game's mechanics.
I'd be willing to chat with you at depth about this if you wish, am closing in on 5k hours. I play legit. Have soloed the game many times. No Sal.
Often what I've found with new players who are having trouble is that it doesn't take a lot of adjustments in their understanding and play to dramatically improve.
[edit: just read Nakos' post. Very useful info there.]
Game is reasonable even before getting your Badass Ranks up from other characters. But there are things to consider.
Zero as mentioned is more of a glass cannon with a higher learning curve. Other characters have more early survivability and then there is Axton with a Turrent and Gaige with Deathtrap to put something else between you and the enemy.
Keep an eye on gear. Keep level fairly close to your character level, though higher rarity may last a bit longer. Check the exact stats for what you need. Do not neglect shields as they will keep you alive. Sometimes you may have to run and get behind something to allow shield to recharge.
Transfusion Grenades can be helpful as they bring you health.
Early on have a shotgun, and when able a rocket launch, in your available options. Helps to get out of Fight For Your Life (FFYL) quicker. Remember, the more often you go into FFYL the timer gets shorter on how long you have to get back up until it resets behind the scenes.
Base rarity is White (common), Green (uncommon), Blue (rare), Purple (epic), Orange (legendary). The game reminds you of this: When Grandma Burps, Patrick Obeys
Do not rely on vending machines for gear. Most of the time, the drops will be better. Though keep an eye on the special sale on the side as sometimes this can give a good item to hold you for a while.
Highly suggest side quests whenever possible during the normal play through, especially if it is your first time going through the game. On the 2nd playthrough (same characterr, next difficulty level) you try to save side quests (at least those with rewards you care about) until the main story is finished as that will level up everything that is left to lvl 50.
Don't forget optional objectives during missions. The more you do results in more XP.
If it really comes down to it, you farm enemies to raise your level. Admittedly there is one boss BNK3R I seem to keep fighting too early and have to remind myself of this.
Avoid DLC content until comfortable with game. Starting locations: Captain Scarlet and Her Pirate's Booty (Oasis), Mr Torque's Campaign of Carnage (Badass Crater of Badassitude), Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt (Hunter's Grotto), and Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep (Unassuming Docks). Sir Hammerlock and Tiny Tina DLC's have spoilers for the main story as well.
