Have the servers gone down?
I was playing and then my game crashed and now I can't get back onto the Shift servers. Is anyone else struggling to get back online?

Matchmaking and co-op with friends used to be managed by Steam. Peer to peer. Shift did not have anything to do with it. It worked quite well.
The current system requires a connection to Shift at all times, so we we can have "a centralized experience and support play across multiple PC platforms". Yay! Just what nobody who had the game wanted.

I suspect the recent requirement to make a new SHIFT account is actually creating an account on the Epic system, so that the whole BL series are moved to an always online system. If the connection gets broken, even in solo play, BAM! back to the main menu while it tries to re-establish a connection.

This bs that has been imposed on us really needs to go, or at the very least made optional. There is no need for a single player game (as described on the Steam store page) to always be connected to a central server. Their "centralized experience" gives us nothing at all.

I don't think the Shift account has anything to do with Epic - it's gearbox's system.

Epic has nothing to do with this in that sense. I don't get why everyone's attacking them as if Gearbox weren't the ones to make this change using their own service. They're trying to do what Ubisoft has been doing for years now, and what Microsoft is trying to do now that they're bringing their first-party releases to Steam. The only part Epic plays is the fact that BL3 is available there, so I imagine 1 and 2 will make their way there eventually, considering this update. Other than that, this is and have always been Gearbox's fault.

Agreed, except for the last statement. Cross-play is great as it helps keep communities alive. A lot of regular players from other online games would love to have cross-play but unfortunately, it came to a point with those games where that's not even possible anymore (e.g. Warframe).

The problem isn't the centralized experience, but that Gearbox clearly have no clue what they're doing. For starters, the Shift account is a joke.

I totally agree that connecting should be optional, but I believe cross-play is a great step. Gearbox just need to figure out how to do it properly, cuz this ain't it.

This stupidity is annoying enough I am giving bl2 a negative review! Flood negative reviews and tickets :) perhaps they will learn a lesson not to destroy a game that worked just fine - they literally changed a working game to a broken game by trying to run the sessions on their own, their current review rate is misleading - because people rated the original game WHICH THIS IS NOT IT.

Now I can play.

For the record, this is still the same game. One problem doesn't make it a completely different game.

And I don't think they care. Look at the reviews for the last DLC and the justified reason behind them. That DLC still have a high price tag for what it is.

I only bought/play this game with friends, through steam. It used to work, it used to be flawless - they gave it an update that keeps breaking that experience. They did change it, for the worse IMO :) negative stays until performance improves or they give it back to steam.

That's fair enough. Just don't go saying it's a different game because it isn't. Still the same but it now has a problem. Problems don't mean a game is completely different than what it once was. If you're gonna take a stance, you gotta use the truth at your favor instead of saying what pleases you for shock value. The latter makes it so people are less inclined to give you any credit, and this certainly applies to the devs.

There is currently no BL2 community on Epic, unless 2K started selling the game there as well a while ago and didn't tell anyone. And all of those Epic gamers got together on the Epic game forum, discussed it all, and implored Gearbox to do something about being able to play with all those Steam gamers.
Oh wait..

Crossplay with the consoles would be worthwhile as there are people who want to be able to do so. That is not what they have done here.

Their new always connected "experience" currently gives us nothing. Being able to connect to some vague Epic community of BL2 players in the future? Sketchy excuse at best, and really should be optional. Having what they have imposed on us, without any opt-out? Nah.

Open a ticket with 2K support and let them know there are issues. They don't get a ticket, there is no problem as far as they are concerned.

For updates on these connection and server issues, visit the Shift Status Twitter:

There were three server outages today:

Ridiculous.
BL3 players were also affected.
