I am a bit perplexed as to how best to play him. After playing Gaige, I wonder how many more bullets Krieg catches with his large body size.

As to your question. Yes, players do play him frequently enough. While I personally play Zer0, I've had Krieg players join my party frequently enough.
Not to mention that he can become a 1-shot monster with Bloodsplosion and Fastball.
1, not being able to reach enemies to plow them in the face ( Yes he can throw his buzz axe but at a decreased attack speed + the flight time to reach the enemy, not to mention most end game raid enemies have knockbacks/ups so you'll be flying all over the damn place trying to hit them, not that they're small targets but no crits for you most likely )
2, no mobs means no overkill healing, so any bosses with limited or no mobs will be the death of krieg every single time. Some bosses have things that count as enemies that aren't technically separate entities, but see #1 also good luck getting them before your team needs them as you're not going to be the only one getting hit and other characters have far less hp to tank the hits. You can bypass this issue with gear, but if you're playing a melee build that sort of defeats the purpose.
3, while bloodsplosion is quite powerful, it's also next to useless against bosses as it requires you to kill an enemy to trigger it, see #2. The melee build is really the damage for krieg, and as such doing a gun build, while seemingly more appealing from a survival expectation standpoint, inevitably turns krieg into a less effective gunzerker, less damage, slower movement, and still requires a bit of workup to get the stacks necessary for it to start being " good ". It doesn't take long mind you, it's not anarchy levels of build up, but it's still something to mention. You won't be at anarchy mechromancer levels of damage, but you'll still be able to chip a boss hp bar. The melee build will also give you a new hatred for silence the voices.
This is ultimately krieg's biggest problem. He has a ton of health, a ton of survivability but absolutely pathetic boss killing potential. Am I saying he can't kill bosses? Absolutely not, but the point is that any damage potential vs bosses he has, can be met or exceeded by another character, if not multiple.
As for low level, that may be the main issue. I hated him too first, but the problem is that in contrast to any other character, he doesn't get good until you reach level 15-20 or something. Confusingly, he even does less melee damage than other classes until level 12. But once you level up high enough and get an understanding of how to play him he's awesome. He's specialist and has some serious weaknesses, but he's also got some insane powers.
