if you can make it to sanctuary the gold chest there is a good place to get some decent purple gear
This time before snipers & others it'll pay off if you concentrate on what the game wants to offer you and not vice versa ~~~ real guns with real names doing real damage that all can appear in the same game order & places from game to game and that introduce the player to the joy of legendaries in BL2.
Make certain not to miss an earliest Hornet pistol (corrosive Dahl legendary that can & does drop from Knuckle Dragger) and an earliest Thunderball Fists pistol (shock Maliwan legendary that can & does drop from Captain Flynt). Nail this pair of game-best beauties before setting sail for Sanctuary & you'll be the coolest vaultie in your school before Level 10! Happy gaming
But ... it is possible to do without it. By the time you get to the Crossroads outside of Sanctuary, you'll have access to one of Marcus' Gun machines which will have Snipers, so ... that's level 8ish to 9ish at most (depending on whether or not you do choose to do Symbiosis.
I just ran through that section during my White Gear only run, and I did NOT have a Sniper rifle for any of it. I used a Torgue AR (without a scope). It gave me a LOT of chance to practice my aim.
So.. yeah, it does suck not to have a Sniper if you want one, but it isn't an insurmountable problem, you can make it through without one.
Seriously it'll rain sniper rifles. And it's only level 4. You have no weapon-specific powers or abilities yet anyway.
In the meantime, do Symbiosis. There are a number of gear chests in that map, so you may get lucky with a new sniper rifle.
I woulda been just as happy concentrating on two game-best rifles in these earliest levels or two game-best shotties or two game-best SMGs or etc etc other gun types ~ whatever's proven itself to be actually available from the game during this period but that'd point the finger at the pair of legendary pistols I detailed. You can smoke all ya want whenever wherever ya want or otherwise pray for the same and if you score a pealescent shotgun or purple sniper, hey that's great but stick to the plan and keep yer eye on the balls that actualy exist in the real game. Not some extra-fancy stuff you just dreampt up that's breathtaking to behold in your mind's eye but have never once been witnessed by real gamers in this real game.
By a similar token, the game's probability of actually "raining snipers" is minimal at best - you know this will be the case by the high cost of sniper ammo & low availability of it. If there are any guns that'll rain by a similar analysis you know in advance that our pre-game logic dictates they'll most probably be SMGs & pistols. Some stuff like this can be reasonably forecast by statistical analysis in this game but never by art or magic :P I use this easy math benefit as much as possible whenever available which is to say not too very often at best lol. Have fun
I didn't mean rain I guess then. But it only takes one sniper rifle drop before you "have" a sniper rifle. If OP continued playing he'd have a sniper rifle in about 10-20 minutes. It isn't like the weapon class is particularly rarer than the other 5 weapon types or anything.
Really? Huh. Never noticed that. I noticed rocket launchers never dropped early level though.
Well, like Zen said, it's best to be in the moment. Take what the game gives you and move forward. Yeah, it sucks to make the wrong choice there.
Still, don't be too discouraged, the way the game is built, weapons become obsolete quite quickly. There may be a period of 3-5 levels where you have to make do without, but by level 8-9 (at the latest) you'll have access to a lot more snipers that are stronger and more capable than the one that Sir Hammerlock can give you.
It's just a Green, it's not anything particularly special.
You want to be careful further on, because there are several more instances where choice matters:
In Rakkaholics Anonymous, you have a choice between the Sloth (a sniper) from Mordecai, or Rubi (a healing pistol) from Moxxi. Rubi might be the slightly stronger choice there, but it does depend a bit.
In Safe and Sound you have a choice between an (awesome) healing Shotgun (the Heartbreaker) from Moxxi, and a (kinda crappy) Relic from Marcus (that speeds up the rate at which weapon machines obtain new wares).
And in Clan War: Zafords vs. Hodunks you have a choice between helping the Hodunks, and having a chance at a Jacobs pistol (Maggie), or helping the Zafords, and having a chance at the Slagga (an SMG).
There may be a few others along the way that I'm not remembering as well.
