Alright maybe I took it too far ahead there. The Hammerbuster is not a bad Legendary AR.
The Gattling Gun? No thanks. It's even worse when you find one without any scopes/sights.
Y'all suck btw
SMGs? Yes. Pistols? Occasionally, yes. Shotguns? Same. Snipers? Damn yes!
But only I only used one AR - torpedo-type. At level 6, I think, and it started to suck rather quickly.
So yes, assault rifles just seem to lack an obvious identifiable niche. For everything they do, there is another gun that does the same plus something else on top of that.
i find E-tech AR's kinda fun. had a Shock Vladof one once, took it to Opportunity for Jack's double. that catwalk above, had 2 Bad Guys i couldn't get a bead on. the thing with the Shock E-tech AR was the shots ricocheted off walls. so i started hitting the ceiling and walked the shots til those 2 got hit. for me, AR's fill that Med. - Long range role and widen the ammo pool.
The "fire as fast as you click" ARs are trash, as far as I'm concerned. I can't quite say why, because I love Jakobs revolvers, and love rapid fire Hyperion shotguns, but mashing an assault rifle just doesn't feel good to me; I'm not a fan of anything by Dahl, either, so maybe Dahl ARs are good, but just not for my playstyle.
I've found a handful of ARs that were good for where I was in the game, though. Early on, a... Vladof(?) spinigun with high attack and/or explosive will obliterate the bullymongs and bandits, if there's only a handful, but the slow reload times can be painful. (And yet, later on, many characters get faster reloads, so...)
I've also found fire and electric ARs that were surprisingly high damage, considering they had an elemental chance of like 6%. It was a good "catch all" weapon, because it had high fire rate, dropped shields, and did high-ish damage to enemies without a shield.
I think later in the game, it's highly dependent on your playstyle AND character build. Like a slag/fire AR with a quick reload skill, or an explosive Axton with the 50% more ammo capacity and therefore less reloading, could be pretty decent.
It basically just seems like a lot of ARs are either strong but low speed/ammo, strong and wildly inaccurate, or weak and inaccurate with rapid fire.
