Multiplayer between Borderlands 2 in GOTY and Handsome Collection Compatible?

Can the Borderlands 2 GOTY edition multiplay with a friend playing Borderlands 2 in the Handsome Collection?

Sorry, for the too basic question, but I already have GOTY but my friend is going to get the Handsome Collection, and I am wondering if both these versions can communicate.

I don't quite get it, but if you mean you are asking if you and your friend can play together even you bought different pack of it, yes you can, of course. Since it's one same game.

However, be noted that the DLC you and your friend have would not be the same, so you cannot accsess some DLC maps that your friend have. Also the level cap is not same (61 with UVH pack 1, 72 with UVH pack 1+2), so if you are looking to extend your gameplay, I'd recommend buying UVH pack 2.

Basically, you both need to have the same DLC's if you want to play together. E.g. Scarlett's? You both need to have it installed. Same with the others, the Headhunters...
The Handsome Collection has Everything. The GOTY has almost everything. The GOTY package does not have any of the content developed and released after the GOTY was released.
You will both need to have the same maps / DLC's installed to be able to play there.

The Vault Hunter Upgrade Packs are a bit different. Ideally you both have both of them (ho ho?)
If you only have the 1st one which means a level cap of 61, but your friend has #1 and #2, you will still be able to level up to 72 if you play in their game. Their game, so their rules etc.
You will NOT be able to do the OP levels though. Digistruct Peak is included in the Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack #2, so you both need to have it installed.

Similarly any of the DLC weapons. You need to own that DLC to be able to use them. If you don't own Scarlett's but someone drops you an item from that DLC, you can pick it up and own it, but you will not be able to equip and use it.

If the Handsome Collection is still on sale, get it. The price will be adjusted to exclude what you have already. This falls into the No-Brainer category.
2 complete games that includes Absolutely Everything for both games? Buy it.

Yes, on Steam you download everything for the sake of compatibility, you just won't be able to actually play what you don't have.
