Should I play Borderlands 1 before I play 2?
As the title says

The newest BL2 expansion is set after Tales but you can play it whenever you want as long as you've beaten the BL2 main story.

I would play through it at least once. Then play 2. Also try to find Tales from the Borderlands. These three will set you up for Borderlands 3. The Pre-Sequel, that's up to you, although I did enjoy the low gravity game play.

Pre-Sequel explains how Handsome Jack was actually a good guy before Lilith got done with him

She is the reason for Borderlands 2

In Pre-Sequel you and Jack are pretty much buddies and you help him with his goals

ok so in that order BL 1, Pre Sequel and BL2? yes?

Or BL 1 and BL 2 then pre Sequel?

bl 1, bl 2, pre sequel at last. Sounds stupid cause the pre sequel story plays before the story in bl 2 but you will understand a lot of things in tps only when you played bl2 before.

Edit: imho ;)

I say try bl1, if it's not really for you, you don't miss alllll that much by jumping to bl2. Imo, bl2 is just a much better game and is way more engaging, I still love bl1 tho

BL1 is completely skippable with shallow story, characters, and gameplay. I'd say the minimum would be to play a couple hours up until you kill Nine Toes so you get the introduction of Marcus, Zed, Scooter, Claptrap, and I guess TK Baha. That way you also have some reference of Fyrestone.

And play TPS after BL2, TPS was written that way.

No, the story in BL1 is not good. It's very poorly done and the ending is a big let down. You can tell story was an after thought in BL1. Only play it after BL2 or TPS and you're really itching for more Borderlands and completely bored with BL2 and TPS.

BL1 has drab character development, bland environments...just blah. The shooter looter style gameplay REALLY carried BL1 at the time. If you really want the story just read or watch a BL1 story summary some place.

But if you have to play in order, if BL1 starts boring you switch to BL2. It's like night and day.

It's a matter of taste. The BL1 story may be basic but a lot of people like the dry and dark humor there more than the wacky humour in BL2 and TPS. I say try it out for yourself. Even if you don't like it, it's a pretty quick game to go through, it's not a huge time investment.

... BL1 is a much better game than BL2. It's short and easy to get through too, so definitely worth playing.
Casurin Jun 17, 2019 @ 8:38am
you do not need to play the games in any particular order, you do not even need to play them to understand the others.
but the games make many references and some points are lost without playing the previous installment.

And spoilers - BL2 tells you a bit about BL1, BL ThePreSequell spoilers a lot about BL2.
(and in each game some of the DLCs spoiler some of the story of that game too)
