Except ratings has nothing to do with steam). So it's all Bamco fault
Typical pr "bla-bla, blame ratings, we don't want to censor anything". I'm pretty sure, they are not even tried cause new scene looks even more brutal (worse) and tasteless/bland in comparison. And even if they tried, they still can make diff versions/dlc something else or even make hosted patch like most H games do. But yeah, it's small company they can't handle it.)
And? It's still their fault. If the game would be 18+ it wouldn't change anything. If they just SO MUCH worried about rating, they can add some patch/dlc, anything, even hold it on their different server (ex: sakura dungeon). There is one million ways or even more of making it uncen, they just making excuses and say "bla-bla, rating, bla-bla". If simplier: they DONT WANT TO DO IT. It has nothing to do with ratings and lame excuses it's just how they treat their customers, even if there is a minority of them. And from my point of view new scene looks even more brutal, but lacks taste. That's it. So no money from me till they fix their mess and stop treating their customers as stupid money bags who would buy anything they offer.
I could understand the outrage if it was pieces of gameplay content that were cut, but, a single cutscene? Jeez.
go back to PSO2
Yup, that's the tantrum that people which supports devs repeat. You can't add anything constructive, can't make the devs look good, either repeat tantrum "it's just you people just not interested in buying, it's just a one scene". Like some quote says: journey with thousand miles begins with a single step. (c) And you either bring the game as is or make censorship worse with each game. There is no such thing as "middle ground" or "it's just a small detail, why bother". Especially with this case, cause patch literally takes Bamco no effort. They have original content, just make patch and replace this video. Host it on own site if needed. But yeah, why bother, people buy it as is, and they can practice their censorship methods in future games.
I will prefer Namco do the right thing now:
release an DLC which restore the contents and requires a credit card to authenticate the age of users. Is it that hard?
Also, supporting the devs? If anything it pisses me off that Bamco considers this while they keep ignoring the removal of some controller options in the PC version of another game (options that are available in the console versions of said game, controller is something that affects how a game plays, but they rather reply to people crying about a cutscene).
Not only they need to have a way to reintroduce the edited content in, but the voice acting if any might need to be resynced, the music if it's on beat with what happens as well (doubt this is the case here), then they need to have the whole thing put into a QA run to make sure nothing broke in the process, etc.
In the end, this may not be worth the effort to simply please the fraction of people pissed about the censorship
A purchase age-gate means nothing for reach of target audience capable of purchase, because as a minor you're not legally allowed to purchase anything on Steam without your legal guardian validating it anyway.
And iirc, nowadays you can use the family options in Steam to put stuff like purchases behind a PIN to enforce that.
Infact, I'd go sofar as to say that claiming that an age gate matters for sales, indirectly states that you're anticipating and counting on minors to enter into a contract of purchase without permission, which is somewhat on the sleezier end of the spectrum of grays.
