Does the protagonist get any better?
So far, I'm at the beginning of chapter 4. In the last 3 chapters, Okabe's behaviours have been...odd, to say the least. At worst, he was an obnoxious delusional man-child who just dropped strange nicknames on Kurisu and overestimating his ability. At this point, it is so cringy that I wonder if I can keep reading this VN. SO can anyone confirms for me whether he'll get better?

Yes, he will get better and his current behavior will make sense plot-wise.
I can fully confirm this. At the beginning he seems very annoying, but he's less annoying later (mostly, at least), and I could tolerate his behavior more as more details about the story and him where revealed. And I like how reliable and responsible he becomes when he's not used for comedy scenes.

So yeah, there's this part about his personality that can be annoying, but there's also a side that makes him very respectable. And the visual novel as a whole is a master piece IMO, so I can only recommend to read past the beginning, at least until more about the main plot is revealed.

Okabe is supposed to be a chunni- he's deluisional yet cares for his members around him, hence his journey is supposed to shape and mature him as well.

His "chuunibyou" behaviour changes a lot after something important happens, i liked the character a lot more when the game gets more serious.

Just wait it out. It's worth. I felt the same way.

I hope you're right. 19 hours in, I'm at chapter 4, and he's such a pain

I feel like this should be a pinned post, because I felt the same when I first played. The only reason I kept going was because I love all things time travel.

By the end of the game, not only does he get better, but the story itself is that much better because he's so annoying at first.

He will get so much better that at some point you will MISS his delusional personality

This, I found him kind of awkward on my first reading but I didn't even know what I had until I lost it.
