What I know is mostly from briefly looking at the Steins;Gate reddit which has a section that explains the series and each of the games in better detail without spoiling.
Also good idea starting with the VN, I started with the anime and got about half way through before I realized it was going to spoil several of the endings of the VN. Just be prepared that it is a very slow start but it pays off.

> - Do I need to play CHAOS;HEAD first? Or is it a separate story with separate characters, etc?
You don't have to read Chaos;Head first. It's two separate stories with separate characters, but... they share the same setting. Steins;Gate is set a year after the events of Chaos;Head, and it has a lot of references to Chaos;Head.
So in other words, you don't have to read Chaos;Head to understand the story of Sheins;Gate, but if you want to understand all references, it's better to read Chaos;Head first.
A follow-up then: if I read Steins;Gate first and CHAOS;Head after, will it be worth it to re-read Steins just for the references? Or is that too hard to say?
Hopefully it won't be region restricted (not that it would completely stop anybody but it would be less hassle)
