Unplayable as German Reich

I have a massive problem that totally kills the fun in this game. I used to play HOI2 a lot so I am not a total noob.

This is what happens when I enter a war with Poland in 1939 as Germany:
- Everyone declares war on me even Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark etc
- Constant sea invasions in northern areas of Germany
- France using Switzerland as a way to flank the Maginot Line
- Romania entering the war and supporting Poland.

Basically it becomes unplayable since the AI is trying to attack me wherever there are no troops and so I have to strech out my army way too much.

Is this because I usually ally with Russia? Or is this normal for HOI4 ... It makes the game unplayable for me and totally unrealistic. Why the hell would Romania join the allies when they were an ally of Germany in WW2. Also Switzerland and Sweden are neutral so why do start attacking me? Totally unrealistic.

Heres the main problem with your situation here. You have the historical Playthrough turned off, turn it on for the AI to start acting acording to history. The min you change your history with germany such as allying with russia all bets are off and your creating a new alternate history of how world war two went. Historically Swedan was at war with germany cause they invaded them.
Once germany goes to war with poland or france everyone will declare war on you. thus world war two. You have to gather your allyes BEFORE you start a war, and you have to do a lot of prepping for the war as well. such as getting your armies to around 110 divisons before you even think of invading poland or france yet. I usually have no trouble with defending my new lands around 1938 to 39 timeframe. Its all about planning. Your still pretty new at the game just keep trying and getting new strategies and it will go much smoother.
Once you get a strategy down you should have no trouble defending UK islands and normandy from invasions while invading the Soviet Union.

Seriously, this thread is about not having a unified strategy compounded by a total inability to manage a major nation.

- Garrison the damn ports you lazy man.
- Turn the Baltic states into German allies, it's in your damn tree so try reading it.
- Turn Poland into an ally, again in the tree

The German tree is without a question the most powerful one, you can literally take all the way down to and including Greece without even starting a war.

OP you havent 'mastered' the basics of the game yet i think . Also with the historical mode turned off each game can play out differently , which for me is the best thing about the game.

You can take a lot of land without war using the tree and even sometimes without.

With the historical setting off, it will be completely different every time.
I have seen France go communist and join the cominterns
I have seen a Russian revolt and take over the Soviets, then join the allies.
The Baltic states can go in just about any direction.

Consider the sea invasions a plus (they will keep happening) since they never really reinforce them, it is an easy spot for you to destroy enemy units. Just keep a small amount of highly defensive units around the coast. They will attack, over and over and lose all organization, at which time you just surround and overrun them.

The historical AI setting is turned on. Still happening that everyone is declaring war and invading me. HOI2 was much better in that regard. Countries that were neutral like Switzerland remained neutral.

BTW. I did use the tree to have good relations with baltic nations. However this doesn´t stop them from declaring war on me.

The constant sea invasions are especially annoying since they are never a serious threat and always only consist of a handful divisons.

Same goes for countries like Denmark or Sweden invading Germany(me) with a ridiclously small army. All they do is annoy me since they obviously have no chance to beat Germany.

Why would a country like Denmark try taking over Germany? It makes no sense.

What I will try to do now is not become allied with Russia and instead play more historical. Maybe that way I wont have to fight off every country in Europe.

There are also way too many Divisions in this game. Even small coutnries like Romania start off with 20 Divisions. Armies were nowhere this big in WW2.

Wtf, germany is fascist and a THREAT to any neighbor. Is denmark fascist? Why shouldn't they?

It makes no sense because they have absolutly no chance. That´s why a coutnry like Denmark didn´t invade Germany during WW2. Makes sense no?

Influence the countries around you to be fascist. They'll be less likely to go to war. You can also abuse garauntees by justifying against people you'll never attack, like Mexico and south America so the allies are out of political power to garauntee on things you want to take.

You can also stage a coup after getting some minor political support in a country which will mess their ♥♥♥♥ up.

Your doing something Unhistorical by making an Alliance with Russia.
And its something that Scares all of your Neighbors. So they all Join Allies cause they are Scared of You.

Hence they all Attack you.
An Good way to Prevent this. Is to Wait with the War.

Use your Politics Tree to Ally most of the Nations around you first. And only after that Ally with Russia.
Also. Try to Befriend your Neighbors and make Non Aggression Pacts. So they dont get Scared from you and thus dont Join the Allies.

I have often Played Germany. And never had the Problem you Described. Mainly because I usually only go to War around 1942 and not 1939.



In Reality.
Germany did alot of Backround Work. To Influence the States around them.
But I bet you did not do that. :)
So dont Complain that they dont Stay Neutral.
Your the one who is not acting Historical.
If you Properly Influence and Improve Relations with your Neighbors. They will not Join Allies.

(Except Belgium and Netherlands. They are so Pro Allies that its pretty much Impossible to get them over to your Side. Thats also because Japan Declares War on Netherlands and they got Politics to Influence Belgium etc.)

Without seeing your game for myself, I'm going to guess you're under-preparing your war-machine before the war, so, maybe this will help.

- Prepare for the worst. Make sure ALL of your borders are garrisoned with a decent garrison. Even prepare for a small counter-attack if needed.

- If you're focusing all of your military on Poland, take some divisions back, and send them for France, or as reserves. Especially if you're being ganged-up on.

- For your naval invasion problem, I would say garrison your ports, but most importantly Achieve Naval superiority. If the Allied Powers completely control the seas around your nation, that's a problem, not only for naval-invasions, but for your trade, and air-superiority.

That's really all I can say for now.

A thin line of 2-3 troops on the costal provinces will pretty much stop any invasion too. just expensive to maintain. Marine attacks suffer serious losses to orginization. have a cheap, light infantry division in infinite, 2-3 wide producing until it's full
