I would have assumed that it is some kind of pocket carrier, since its the ship you litterly start out of in the first X game but its not sadly. Or since it is classed as destroyer let it have like two missile tubes as a main cannon shooting small nukes, would fit the time period also.
I found it to be the easiest mission by far, its squad warps into every area in a perfect line and destroys things in a few seconds. Unlike the other capital ship mission where that thing is useless
As far as comparison:
It uses old tech, so it's not meant to be superior to modern tech.
Weapons are it's greatest strength. It has guns with the speed of a pulse turret but 10x the damage. This out classes all the medium turrets of the Barb by a huge margin and makes it a slaughterer of medium and small ships.
It also has 138,000 shields which means the Barb would die if it stood and fought.
Edit: it's also twice as maneuverable comparing it's stats.
It's more fan service than anything, it doesn't do well even against fighters from my observations.
TLDR: in vanilla its usefulness is questionable. In a heavily modified game it has a niche as a heavy explorer.
See that's what I seemed to notice as well in the mission. I wonder why that isn't really considered much at all. I noticed its guns were absolutely eating things. Especially L class ships that a lot of XL ships struggle to beat in a 1v1. Tanking hits and huge damage seems like a great combo. I'll have to pick it up soon and try it out myself.
Sapporo doesn't slaughter anything because of silly amount of those turrets.
Also those turrets are not 10x better.
theoreticalDPS of those EM's is like 180 so 1500 for whole Sapporo. (if every shot somehow hits)
Mentioned Pulse have tDPS 72
(and if we want to still talk about Barbarossa - it have also 4 L turrets - that's like 350 tDPS each.)
I just don't see a point of having this ship, or building it. Easy +20M at start.
e: It also won't tank a lot with that recharge rate.
It not really a heavy hitter on any front of capital ship but it great for anti fighter support because of it ship and coverage
I just have them sitting in formation and looking pretty as it kill all the pesky fighter flying around my main battery ships
I do wonder how a modded Sapporo will do though against a capital ship like the K
What mk3 variants? Could you screenshot them?

You can angle side on and get every single turret on target.

One cowboy modded Sapporo can last a surprisingly long time against the K but ultimately loses because not enough firepower and distractions
