The Kingdom End DLC is excellent, but I don't think it's a great start for new players; it presumes a significant amount of familiarity with X series lore. I would recommend instead the Terran Cadet start; it starts you in a relatively safe location, with rather good gear, and provides a plotline to introduce you to game mechanics and story.

Welcome to X4, and I hope you have fun!

Yeah, Terran Cadet is probably the way to go if you want a guided start, which is what I recommend for people completely new to the series (I assume that's you from your post).

My vote also goes for the terran cadet start if it's going to be your first one, guided enough at the start to hold you a bit, with good rewards halfway and in the end of it's storyline.

Other than that, choose wathever you fancy more aesthetically, Terran, boron and split aesthetics are awesome in my opinion.

I'm not so hot on the Terran Cadet. That start has several factions set to -15 relations, which will be a challenge for a brand new player to overcome. Also, that Katana you get (after quite a bit of fighting) is a weird ship that won't take orders even if you give the ship a captain.

Anyway, I made a guide with this kind of topic in mind so I could answer quickly.

Split is my personal favorite DLC. Their ships are aggressive and they have the biggest carrier..
Terrans have the meanest XL ship that can one shot almost anything.

Terran Cadet is best start for new players.
Getting Rep with the factions that dislike you is incredibly easy don't let that disuade you.
Plus, Terran is the best. Purge the alien scum Littering *our* universe.

I was considering asking a similar question myself being new to X4 but having played X2 several years ago. However, I have another question - do the other DLCs present themselves as you play the core game or do you need to start a new game each time (or sometimes). And..or.. do you simply become too powerful in the core game to have any challenge remaining to play the DLCs without a restart? (apologies to the OP for a partial thread hijack!)

Other than some very rudimentary start-specific introduction stuff, all starts have access to all content. You don't need to "finish" one DLC before starting another; in fact, you probably won't want to, since storyline missions often have big difficulty jumps. If a storyline is suddenly too hard, do something else for a while.

X4 is very sandboxy; go where you want, do what you want. You'll probably reach a point where just about nothing in the universe is a credible threat any more: You've wiped out the Xenon, the Teladi are in awe of your ssuperb profitss sskillss, the Terrans are asking for you to please maybe consider giving Earth back because they were still using it, et cetera... but that's probably hundreds of hours, at least, into a playthrough.
