X4 has high emphasis on building an empire, with ships and/or stations, managing large sums of money, mining operations, trading, patrols, etc. Admittedly, nothing is stopping you from doing any of these things personally, in fact most 'missions' need to be completed personally.
That being said, the roleplay of the individual player is something you kinda need to create for yourself. There aren't as many options for gameplay if you are not trying to run an economic empire of some sort. At least, not that many that will progress the game much. There is resource mining and trading, and some military/outlaw things you can do, but nothing like bounty hunting (unfortunately) or signing on for a military campaign, temporarily. There is exploring as well, but admittedly there isn't too much to find. A consequence of a game that doesn't focus primarily on it.
The main criticism of this game is people often find a lack of direction. IE what do I do now? There are many things to do, but not always a reason to do them at all. There is a main story, but...well it takes a long while for it to kick off. Case and point, I haven't had it happen yet.
Though while it does have controller support, I can't speak for how good the controls are. If you are going to use a controller, I would recommend using it only for actual combat. Interacting with the VERY complex UI outside of combat is already a nightmare, much less with a controller.
I'm not much of that type of player but my friend got his set up to work with the game.
You might have to mess with some settings and stuff though if you want to do some fancy space drifting.
Like turn flight assist off.
On X4, I figure I'll have 300 hours of game time in by the end of next week.
I like Elite and I like strategy games, X4 is a good combination of both. You don't get a huge galaxy and landable planets like ED. What you do get is fleets of ships under your command, building your own stations, walking around on stations, and spacewalking.
ED is better for dogfighting. The mouse/keyboard flight controls on X4 are strange, but once you learn them they are better since you need mouse/keyboard for everything else in the game.
Get X4, it's lots of fun and very deep.
If you like Elite for it's depth, you'll be disappointed with X4. This is like a child still in it's father's balls.
It more of a flight game with trading and stuff but never go that deep into it and that pretty much it.
