How to get Captain for main ship?

One of my missions is to get a captain for my main ship (start ship), but I have no idea how to do this. The only way I know of how to get a captain is when I buy a new ship, but I have no idea how to get a captain for myt existinbg starter ship?

Does anyone know how? Thanks.

Hire any crewman on any station, right click your main ship (that should be docked on the station) and press select, then select captain from the right hand view as the job. You can also contact any crewman or marine on board (obtained from upgrade menus in wharfs, shipyards and equipment docks) and tell them to work somewhere else, then select the job as above.

I can't seem to do that. I have crew but the promote best crew to pilot is blanked out. But i don't want a pilot, I want a captain for the mission.

But I can't right click and promote crew. You can't right cliick anything on the info screen.

I wish this game explained how to play it better.... O_o I still have no idea what anyone here is talking about, telling me to right click the crew in the info screen when you can't right click in the info screen? Are my controls different to everyone elses or something?

Explain to me like I've never played games before, because that's what this game feels like. When you explain to me just remember that I don't know everything you know, you literally have to explain step by step.

Best way: Dock on a large military ship (e.g. destroyer). Wander around and interact with everyone you see. Click "hire". A window opens, look at stats. If you find one that has any skill in piloting, find your ship in the leftmost window; right click to "select". With ship selected, you will be able to choose a position in right drop down menu, choose "pilot". Confirm. There you go.

Sorry my bad. You have to browse the crew name under the tab where you see all your crew aboard, and then Right click on one of your men :)

you can not replace your self if you should sit in the pilot seat.

how ever, if you look into the ships infos while NOT in the pilot seat you can promote any Person on your Ship to be the Pilot / Captain.

First let me say that promoting a crew member to captain is not a good idea. Reason being his skill as a pilot is likely to be less than 1 star which means you can't give him orders. I just tested this and that was my exp.

Second you need to be docked at a station.

If you get up from your ship while docked you can move around the station areas where you will see NPCs. Run around the station visit all the diff areas and talk to all the NPCs you will eventually find one that is a captain. You can then talk to him and hire them. Once hired he will go to your active ship in the docking bay. Now from the map "m key" you can right click the ship select information ---- crew button ---- rickt click the relief pilot"aka captain" ----work somewhere else for me ----- right click the shop select role "captain" and done.

If the captain has already boarded the ship the change is instant if he was on another ship wait for him to walk to the new ship assignment.


To simplify this process I started the main story line mission by scanning the nearest station and talking to a captive Boron. It calls for buy a ship"cheapest possible" to blow up. I moved the captain from that ship to my starter ship. Any time you buy a ship you have the option to hire a captain or not.

There is a crew tab, find the crews name it would be under "service crew" or marines. Also you can grab any one from a dock and promote them some cost more then others based on skill. you can do this if you want a pretty boy/girl to look if you sit on that bridge or just because it freaking works eaiser. Hire them right click on ship, it will have slots you can assign pick captain. Same deal with station manger easier to grab some SOB off a dock and hire them, then just feed them some manger books so they get better.

Do you mean that there is no option to hire them, or no conversation choices at all? Ordinarily captains you meet on a station can't be hired, but should still have the conversation options for asking directions. Some crewmen or marines can't be hired, as they occasionally give missions, ( like Corin King on the Ministry of Finance prison), but they should still give directions. If your not getting anything at all, the only thing I can think of is that it might be a problem with a mod, if you're using any.

It does happen occasionally that you lose the ability to interact with anything at all, but that's not the case here. Reloading the save can usually solve this, maybe try that?

I have to correct this one. You do not have to be docked at a station to assign a crew member to be pilot/captain. This can be done at anytime and anywhere.

And NPC's on stations that are Pilots and Captains cannot be hired. They are already assigned to ships (supposedly) and they are not employable. You can however hire Marines or Service Crew from stations. If you check their stats, they may have Piloting skills already. Marines tend to have Piloting skills more often versus Service Crew.
