I'm sill trying to determine this for sure, but it seems to me raiders will sometimes spawn randomly within your walls, so it seems a bit useless. Not to mention that the numbers of object you can build is limited.

What I started doing is building a tall structure somewhere in my settlement surrounded by fortified defences. I change the bind point to that location and remove the ladder to make sure the raiders have no access. This at last avoid me appearing in the middle of a gun battle, with no element of surprise possible. I'm not impervious to bullets or grenades but it's a start. If that doesn't work I might change my bind point to somewhere that has more cover

I can say you what i saw. No matter what defence you build if you personally dont go to defend, the casualties are totally random it could be 0 or could be all, you can even build wall from turrets, it doesnt matter. And well when you personally come to defend i guess you dont need much.

So basically everything you build is just to entertain yourself, i dont see absolutely anything that makes sense in game terms when you build settlement, except some companions gain affection, thats all. If you miss ♥♥♥♥♥♥ daily quests from MMOs feel free respond to defence.

Id rather see few scripted invasions on main settlements where actuall defence matters than this nonsense. Maybe there are, i didnt follow minuteman line much yet, sitting on getting Castle, this faction looks really pitifull in fallout world, and in Bethesda game spirit - lets give players all factions to join no penalties or requirements. Sad they dont learn much from better devs.

the wall does help if you do it perfectly and make sure there is at least 1 or 2 gates, in my sanctuary i have a wall around the entire place and a gate in the bridge itself this makes the attacks hurdle to the bridge or into the lake to get to the settlement and by then the sirens alerted everyone to them, and the spotlights and turrets are already on there asses before i've even ran there.

turrets just make them less likely to happen and help with the actual defenses, sanctuary seems devoid to that as i see a kidnapping there happen that often can barely quest sometimes, least they lead to the same spot got the keycard so can quick rescue, hell once i had to rescue from the place again and there were no bandits lol.

I walled a few of mine, large and small; results have been mixed. Some have attacker spawn points inside the green limit, others seem to have them all outside the border.
When we get the GECK, I think I'll be making a mod to move them all outside the green, among a couple other little fixes, like the bloodbugs at Taffington constantly respawning, but the dead, rotting, putrescent brahmin never going away, along with ash and goo piles.

you mean poorly planned optimized, and written, in the hopes that the modders will do all the heavy lifting to save the game?

yeah the ash and goo piles are starting to become annoying, ever since i started using plasma weapons, the entire game world is slowly turning into one giant puddle of soylent green, because they never despawn, but the thigns i kill respawn

It's not bad, it adds element of replay value, to rescue people and help settlements, but gets rather annoying quickly. I have settlement with combined resources of 20 and defence of 80, I still get kidnappings there even with full wall around it.

Funny, i have alot of settlements, i never respond to defend them and never build much, but still never had people kidnapped lol.

Actually the most funny thing happened - I have Alliance which fully walled with TONS of turrets ( that are actually tagged as unfriendly but dont atack you lol ) and i build even more turrets around and after i didnt come to defend it couple of shtity raiders killed all settlers, thats when i completely abandon bothering with settlements, the game itself has alot of better content to do.

I quit responding to help defend them after I fast traveled to one to help and 3 missiles were shot in my face by super mutants.

I know building a wall for the castle helps a lot. I used the conrete wooden floors and filled in the gaps of the walls and moved 2 of those laser turrets and 4 gun ruttets at the single entrance. they've managed to stop everything from missile launcher power armoered raiders to deathclaws, to radscorpions. I wish I could set all my settlements up in this manner so when I spawn to help them I am not being shot at from all sides.

I had that too, though one had a fatman and 2 of them had a rocket launcher.
I wasn't very amused.

Managed to quicksave too for some weird reason.

Not in the slightest. The enemy attackers

a) are only affected by settlement defenses when you are in the cell - all those walls and turrets don't do anything if you're not there.

b) The enemy spawn from pre-placed spawn points. Right on the edge of the settlement. Some of them are inside the settlement. The walls will not stop anyone from getting in because they're not set to spawn outside and move towards the settlement.

B is exactly whats wrong with the system, theyre set to spawn BEHIND any logical defences youd make, making all of the videos they showcased back in advertising for "settlement defense" pointless, because the areas they SHOWED enemies assaulting from, were all outside. hell, several of the videos shown showed raiders charging across the bridge to sanctuary, from my experience, they ONLY spawn in the semi-destroyed houses, so looking at the settlement, using LOGIC to dictate how your defenses should be is pointless

(still kinda pissed i cant assign snipers to my 5th adn sixth story windows in my massive towers)

Walls around your settlement is only there for looking nice...they dont matter at all defensively, neither does equipping your settlers with awesome guns, that only helps if you go to the settlement to defend it.

The thing is..defence only matters as a detterent..the more defence, the less likely it is the settlement will get attacked...but if it is attacked and you don't show up, the settlement will ALWAYS loose, even if you have it covered in laser or rocket turrets and have 600 defence, walls around it and no door out..it will loose.

this is also why I decided to not care about building walls to keep things out, I just build 1 building and then have the food fields around it and enough defence to not be attacked often, the other settlements I dont help or care about except this one..

Would be different if the defence turrets actually had a value when I cba to help the place..would be nice to now and then see a message...The settlers of Sanctuary succesfully defended themselves against a gang of super mutants...but no such thing..they are helpless puppets without me there...

Just to tell you how pointless walls are....I built a base on top of 1 of the highways (at finch farm i think it was), which could only be reached if you had a PA with a jetpack or one of the flying things from BoS..BUT, when finch farm was attacked by supermutants i didnt bother to go there..but after the mission failed i went...and all my defences and generators on top of the bridge had been destroyed despite not even being visible from the ground, even the turrets put inside the building there...and with the building being unreachable without the previously mentioned things......it just means...walls/los it doesnt matter when you arent there..even if you are there it doesnt, because if you have a gate whatever attacks you will just open it..or even if you could lock it, your stupid settlers would open it and run out to shoot the attackers..
