Computer shuts off immediately after opening cutscene
Alright so...I start Fallout 4 up on my computer and everything is going great. I get to the point where 3D models appear (character creation) and after a minute my computer turns off and reboots. No blue screen. So I try again and as soon as I skip the opening cutscene to get back to the character creation, it shuts off and reboots again. This doesn't sound like a temperature issue to me because it would probably take a few minutes for my gpu to overheat. I'm thinking it's maybe a power issue. I do not have a grounded outlet. I'm using an adapter on a grounded power strip. Anyone have anything similar happen to them?

Measure your temps with a program anyway. When a CPU or GPU is being used it's amazing how fast the heat can increase, it can go to 100C in mere seconds.

Okay so I think I figured the issue out. At least I think I did. I didn't have the latest Nvidia driver installed. My temps are all perfect. My GPU doesn't go above 40C. My proccessor max is around 50C. I did only have the game in High quality and in windowed mode. I'm going to attempt to start it up at recommended quality (Ultra) and at full resolution.

I didn't think something like a driver would cause this to happen, though, to be honest.

These are just above idle temperatures, you need to get the temperatures while running demanding tasks.
And post your specs

Check your event viewer for the error code.

I played for about half an hour on max settings and all of a sudden as I was exiting the vault my computer shuts off again. These are my specs.

GPU: GeForce GTX 970
Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Trident X 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

My error code was 41. Just that my CPU turned off incorrectly.

My temperature of the GPU was around 67C while playing.

Hate to bump, but bump.

Same issue, any ideas?

I'm having the same exact issue, Error code 41, no BSOD or Minidump. I have tried the following:

- Loading the beta fix for Fallout 4 - no success
- Upgrading to the latest Nvidia drivers - no success
- Playing in window mode/borderless - no success
- Rolling back Nvidia drivers to previous versions - no success
- Running a driver update utility to update all other drivers - no success
- Disable steam overlay - no success
- Ran speedfan to log all GPU and CPU temperatures prior to the computer restart - no rise in temperature, all stable - no success
- Changed system recovery settings to disable automatic restart, and enabled Minidumps - no success, no minidump created
- Performed GPU stress test with Furmark for >1 hour on max settings - no triggered restart
- Ran Prime95 to stress CPU for long period of time - no triggered restart
- Memtest86+, ran for over 4 hours, no errors
- Played on lowest possible settings in Fallout 4 - still restarts - no success
- Reinstalled Fallout 4 - no success
- Disabled various audio drivers - no success
- Run in compatibility mode for previous Windows versions - no success
- RESET WINDOWS 10, meaning all apps and settings wiped, redownloaded all drivers, installed Fallout 4, NO SUCCESS

At this point I have no idea what else to try, if it was a physical hardware problem I believe the stress tests would have triggered the problem, and even other video games, but only fallout 4 restarts my computer.

It is definitely not a temperature problem, I'm not confident it could be a PSU issue given that the stress tests push my temps up far further than Fallout 4 does meaning we are pulling more power.

I recently upgraded my PC just so I could play Fallout 4 on high settings but have not been able to play it stable for >15 minutes, there is no stuttering leading up to the reset, it just randomly happens. Sometimes it appears to occur when leading up to a cutscene or just ending a cutscene.

Specs:
Motherboard: ASUS Z170-A
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
GPU: NVidia GTX 780
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB DDR4 2666
Drive: Samsung SSD 840 Series
PSU: Corsair 750 Watt Modular

I feel this has to be some Nvidia driver issue specifically with Fallout 4, however I unfortunately do not have another video card to test on. The only thing I see similar between our systems is the PSU, so the next step I will try is plugging the PSU directly in the wall and not in the power strip, as well as buying some replacement modular cables for the GPU or try different ports on the PSU.

Might be a failing harddrive.
Can't hurt to backup everything you have right now, just in case.

Why are none of you posting temps??? Run the game with the temperature monitor (like Speccy) and see if it's overheating.

Could be a PSU issue, could be a temp issue.

I highly doubt this would be a failing hard drive, I do agree backups are a good thing however. The reason I doubt this is if it was a failing hard drive other applications would trigger the reset, after reinstalling Fallout 4 and resetting windows Fallout 4 would be physically installed in different sectors on the drive each time. Also, the game is loaded into RAM when playing so would not necessarily be reading much off the hard drive.

My CPU temps during the crash do not go >35C, my GPU temps do not go >70C.

No, but if your pc so much as get a minor bug in the vital systems, it will shut down.
But nah, i'm just speculating. I just hope that you have never defragged that SSD or even hibernated the pc, because that's not good.

hey, try to run the game with antivirus offline for a try, and see if that works.
Got blue screens when i played l4d2 a very nice day. it was then a bad day.
Randomly switched off the antivirus and it kept playing.
Try it once or twice.
