Aspect ratio - no options.
At startup, selecting options, there are only two aspect ratio's available; 16:9 and 16:10.
This give a wide narrow picture. I require a 1024 x 768 resolution that fills my screen.
Can someone please help?

I'm kind of wondering this too..

What? I have the flat screen Samsung SyncMaster 740N - 4:3 ration.
The Witcher 3 I have just completed. Why should this be different?

Thats a monitor that was new 8-10 years ago mang. The world has moved on to bigger and better things since then.

ANyway, Documents-> My Games-> Fallout 4-> Fallout4Prefs.ini:

iSize H=768
iSize W=1024

save it, make it read only.

Most devices pack up all too quickly and have to be replaced. When I do find something that lasts
I would hate to have to replace it simply because a game demands that I do.
Anyway. I have mostly solved the problem. I opened the game's ini file with notepad and changed
the vertical and horizontal numbers to suit my screen and it has worked.

Eh man, its more than just "a game wants it"

A monitor that old has comparatively bad color, bad response time, probably crappy backlighting, etc. its not that it is or ever was a "bad" monitor, its just that newer tech is MUCH better by default.

And since that new tech is all 16:9 or more rarely 16:10, thats what games want to run in.

But hey the ini thing worked for you so do your thing.

My monitor has excellent color, good response time and playing through The Witcher 3 I have
constantly marveled at the realistic scenery and people appear as real as in a movie.
Galloping on my horse across the land there is no lagging. Everything, in my eyes, is perfect.
Can't ask for more. Hope Fallout 4 impresses me as much.

It wont. Nothing looks as good as W3, still. it amazes me in fact, becuase W3 looks AND runs better than anything else this year. And FO4 looks pretty damn bad at times lolol.

That would be like having seen Milla Jovovich onscreen and getting super hyped for your mail order bride.

If I saw Milla J I would hope my mail order bride had more meat on her.

Youd cut yourself on Milla man, she nothing but skin and bones.

... Ah, THAT old.

The 740N is from 2007, almost 10 years ago. (And why aren't you using it's native 1280x1024 resolution, anyway?) IT IS AN ANTIQUE.

...

Buy a real monitor.

Your monitor has got to be wearing out after ten years of use.

Also: right now on NewEgg, I'm looking at the SAMSUNG S24E390HL[www.newegg.com]. It's under $180 ... it's bigger (23.6" screen, compared to your 17"), has slightly more colors (16.7M, compared to your 16.2M), half he reaction time (4ms, compared to your 8ms), an improved resolution that Fallout 4 can definitely provide (1920x1080, compared to your 1280x1024 max), almost twice the contrast ratio (1000:1, compared to your 600:1), and a wider viewing angle (178 degrees both vertical and horizontal, compared to your 160 degrees V/H).

And that's an EL CHEAPO monitor by today's standards. For $500, yu could get the SAMSUNG U28E590D[www.newegg.com] ...
  • 28" screen
  • 4K UHD - that's 3840x2160 resolution!
  • 1 billion colors - that's 1,000,000,000 of them!
  • 1000:1 contrast ratio
  • response time of only 1ms
  • did I mention 4K UHD ...?

Granted, half a grand is damned pricey ... but there's still the under-$180 option above, that would constitutet a major upgrade for you ...

From what you say, should I possibly install that Graphics mod from Nexusmods which by all accounts tweaks the graphics, making it more vibrant and the wasteland appears less washed out.

Rezzing the thread after NINE YEARS to chastise the person literally helps no one.
