shotgun has virtually no range
I'm trying to use a shotgun, and I've been noticing that it has unbelievably short range. I'm not talking like 10 feet kind of thing, I mean my two shot fully modded shotgun does about 3 damage 90% of the time to any target unless the barrel of the gun is clipping through the target. Is this normal?

Well mine surely works wonders at ~10 feet.
I found the double barrel shotgun modded with a long barrel to have a pretty good distance. Could normally do a fair amount of damage from the other side of the room

I think it happens less often when I'm in sneak mode... could this be it, or might there be another reason

crouching in general raises your accuracy so you're aim might be off and only the outer bit of the spread actually hits the target

Have you used long barrels instead of improved short barrels? Long barrels basically double shotgun Range (granted, that's still in the 70s or something). which is a big factor for VATS shot accuracy.

Shotguns are always going to have worse accuracy (and Vats shot count) than most guns. But a long barrel helps a lot, on top of the whole "tightens spread" effect.

Aside from that, moving while shooting causing magical RNG bullet spread even on semi auto combat rifles, yeah.

I've basically given up on Plasma shotguns due to their projectiles nature meaning even point blank shots missing.. My combat shotgun and laser shotgun still see use though.

Are you moving while shooting?

While moving, your "accuracy" stat goes down (the crosshair gets bigger), and magically your bullets fly all over the place.

If you are using a muzzle extension, (silencer, compensator,) these severely affect range.

I'm stationary, and trying both vats and manual aim. my two shot advanced combat shotgun has advanced reciever, long barrel, marksman's stock, medium quick eject mag, circle reflex sight, and muzzle break.

i use my shotty for inside, where everything is close anywats and ya add a berral if you want, i got the auto shotty later its all good

Combat Shotgun Muzzle Brake: Exceptional recoil control. Better per-shot recoil. Inferior range.

shotguns in this game have a cone of 30 degrees forward, basically useless.

Wow it can actually hit a target that its clipping through for damage?

Thats substaintially better than the Flamer with a vaporization nozzle on it... which can't really deal damage to anything at any range. I'm reasonably confident that if I could literally get an enemy inside the nozzle itself it would still do nothing to them.

Putting the standard "long range" nozzle on it makes it have a range almost as good as your "clip through to hit" shotgun.

Long barrel or sawed off.

But I think the problem is that Bethesda's people have never seen a real gun before and assume that all shotguns work like videogame shotguns - complete man-stoppers at two feet and turn to cotton candy fluff at ten with the incredible spread they give them.

No chokes or anything to change the tightness of the shot pattern in the mods you'll notice.

This is my theory too.
