Walk up to him and you will be prompted to apply a Stimpak.

Don't, it's a waste of a stimpack, he'll get up when you stop being in combat.

if he gets injured enough to be whining on the ground and he doesn't move, walk up to him if you have a simpack and press action button (im on x1 so its a for me) i think it E

Or just leave him alone and eventually he heals up.

After early verisions this is incorrect and the fact that autohealing worked was a bug. Dogmeat was meant to be a weake companion. And in survival mode all companions require healing, not just the Dog.
Difference is that is survial he'll also die, in normal mode hell return to Red rocket or to your base.

Dogmeat is marked permanently as Essential even in survival mode vanilla. If you've killed him in this game, it's because you have a mod for it specifically.

You used a stimpac on a dead thread older than a feral ghoul.

Just to add something relevant to the necro, one of the reasons to actively heal Dogmeat is because half a dozen different companions have it as something they like. So you used to beat him up in a settlement with them all nearby, then give him a stimpak to bump the affinity of all of them.

I don't remember offhand if Bethesda added a cooldown period to this along with most of the other repeatable likes, or if he's still a walking affinity mill.

It is a 2-hour cooldown period. I sent Strong to another settlement and moved a bedroll up to the top of Abernathy Farm, with Dogmeat as a companion ordered to Stay. Got max affinity with Codsworth, Curie, Deacon, Valentine and Piper generally together in a run of smacking/healing him with my Rockville Slugger (tip: you can only hurt him from behind, not while he is looking at you). Didn't have Longfellow yet at the time.

Edit: another tip, he'll move a little each hit (better to point him towards something limiting his movement). LOL
