DISCREPANCY ALERT: Lorenzo's Artifact, The Zeta Gun, and Jack Cabbot
I was doing the quest "The Secret of Cabbot House" and I noticed, if you side with Jack Cabbot and kill Lorenzo Cabbot he gives you around 500 caps, and then tells you to come back in about a week. When the week passes and you go to him, he offers you a weapon which he describes as a "laser rifle", and then later says that it uses standard energy cell ammo. However, he gives you a unique GAMMA GUN called Lorenzo's Artifact that uses GAMMA ammo. It's nothing big, obviously, but a discrepancy I noticed instantly upon recieving the weapon. I mean the gun basically sucks because it only does 25 ballistic and 20 radiation damage. The upside is that it's a concussive blast that cripples the ♥♥♥♥ out of enemies and sends their bodies flying upon death. Too bad it takes 7 out of 8 shots to kill them. Further more, Jack has a another unique gamma gun in his lab, called "Zeta Gun", and this is essentially the same as the artifact, except it only deals 20 radiation damage and that's it. It also has a unique red radiation blast as apposed to the normal green one. What's weirder still is that even though it supposedly does less radiation damage, it seems to be even more effective than my modified to ♥♥♥♥ gamma gun (which does like 320 radiation damage, 40 energy damage) and Lorenzo's Artifact (which does 25 ballistic and 20 radiation). Further more, there apparently was a cut unique alien blaster intended to be in this game called Zeta Gun. This quest is obviously very Alien oriented, and with the discrepancy with what he says the gun is compared to what you actually get, the weird as ♥♥♥♥ damage of the current game zeta gun and lorenzo's artifact, and the fact that a unique alien blaster called the Zeta gun was intended to be in the game all lead me to believe that this quest was either written and rewritten a few times, or no one could decide on the reward of the quest. I mean come on; he calls it a laser rifle, hands you a gamma gun, and has a gun with the name of a cut alien weapon in his house lab, all while the whole quest is based on the idea that his father talked to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ aliens . I find this pretty interesting as you can tell.

I'm spitballin' here but it could be a typo for the damage of the Zeta Gun (not the one he gives you). It might be 200+ damage but the typer missed a zero or something and only typed 20. And it probably does energy damage that is not even listed.

Good find ;)

As for the reward being the wrong type of gun, that is just a poor job of quality control and editing.

the artifact is excellent weapon. stop thinking small and only looking at the numbers.

think of ways to utilize what it does. like sending supermutants flying from the rooftops and headfirst into the concrete ground.

or simply a few shots on boss like enemies to make them pretty much a pig on the slaughterbench.i encountered a legendary deathclaw at level 60 and smashed it with the artifact for fun before i killed it off with my plasma infused minigun.

yeah i had my doubts about its usefulness too when i saw the numbers after obtaining it. but when i saw what it could do to the enemies all doubt was gone.

Possible, I think the projectile on the Zeta Gun is smaller, and the blast appears to be just a tad smaller, and of course a unique red color. I also unintentionally got two of them, because I stole one from his house, and upon starting the last quest in his series the gun had reappeared in his lab. He's either super good at making them or...

Something else I remember, if you side with Jack, he kills lorenzo with a massive dose of "Zeta" radiation . Perhaps the Zeta Gun utilizes this same technology, and it is indeed a typo?

I mean, I've never seen it make anyone fly unless they died already. It just creates knockback with every shot while still only doing 25dmg? Unless there's a hidden feature of it that I don't know about.

The artifact gun was doing absurdly high damage on my gunslinger character, outdamaging all my other super energy pistols by far.

I think you are right that the damage numbers don't reflect the truth.

I meant that the Zeta Gun( the one you can find in his house on the table) did higher damage despite only saying it does 20. The artifact gun is the one you get for the quest, and is essentially just a pistol that cripples and gives them the minor knockback effect on every shot, but is laughably underpowered in terms of damage.

The artifact weapon benefits from the explosive expert, nuclear physicist, and (i think) the gunslinger perks. If all of those are maxed out, then the weapon deals incredibly high damage and literally sends people flying in addition to crippling them provided it doesn't 1 shot them.

both the zeta and artifact deal direct damage bypassing restince to rad posioning that why your finding the zeta gun better than the gamma gun. or thats what i got off the wiki

It's just a way to add a basic dragon shout effect to the game.. pity about the lack of mountains to blow things off heh

Interesting, though I think freeing the wrongfully imprisoned and tortured Lorenzo is the better thing to do.

And you gain Immortality, no radiation problems ever and a nice strength bonus from that.

So I take the Zeta Gun and Immortality, rather than lorenzo's artifact gun.

I mean he was reportedly murderously mad when he came back from the alien city or something.

And this information is from whom? I guess you say it's from the son.
Actually the son is the one who imprisoned him for 350+ years, drained him of his blood to become immortal and never really figured out how to cure him because it suited him just fine?

His son has one heck of a conflict of interest here. I wouldn't believe a word he is saying. Especially if you look how he handles the rest of his family.

So you think he was just admitted to an insane asylum for no reason whatsoever?

Rightio...

He wasn't admitted, his son put him there because of his headgear.

We actually don't know either way.

But considering Lorenzo takes pleasure in the fact that the Commonwealth is essentially a lawless place and he can do whatever he wants with ultimate power, I doubt he's a nice guy...
