Absolutely ridiculous
Alright, gotta harp on something that's really pissing me off. Every combatant from the lowliest raider peon to the beefiest mutie legendary is apparently capable of blocking a nuclear ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast with their forearm. It's a little infuriating when I run up to a raider, disarm him, then proceed to have him stop every non-VATS melee attack either by jabbing me in the face, stopping the momentum of my ROCKET POWERED SLEDGE HAMMER, or simply by casually raising a forearm and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blocking it. Forces almost a complete reliance of VATS for melee and unarmed. Boo I say.

Actually, you can do more.

I found a unique weapon called Big Jim. It has a 20% chance to cripple limbs. It's a big wrench that does decent melee damage.

I have used it to cripple even deathclaws and manage to run away backwards into the jaws of a legendary ragstag or something, but my ineptness is besides the point.

With blacksmith level 2, you can turn this Big Jim into a pretty heinous melee weapon that has a greater chance to cripple.

Never underestimate the power of disabling limbs.

For fast enemies i use the serrated switchblade for the quick interrupt, the heavy pipe wrench to cripple enemies (big leagues helps), and the supersledge for big slow heavy hitters. Works pretty good, im doing a melee pt on survival and have used vats maybe twice (lvl 20 now). (check out some of my vids here on steam).

I'm just not gonna switch melee weapons that many times. :| I'll just stick to bamfing around with blitz and critting people's heads off with Rockville Slugger, and move my character towards a hybrid gun build. Non-VATS melee is just super unsatisfying to me. At its very best, it devolves into dancing around in front of someone trying to time hits while all their friends riddle you with bullets. You also seem to be able to attack about 1/3rd as fast as in VATS. Bleh.

I'm playing a super smart make-shift engineer build and i like to use a bleeding extra heavy pipe wrench for the weaker more humanoid enemies, then a knee capping shotgun for the big brutes that like to block my attacks
