There is no "lead" in pencils!
Just sayin. It's graphite. So the breakdown should be "carbon".

I think they did used to use it decades ago, much like they used lead in paints.

Fallout is in an alternate timeline, and one where they used atomic energy for everything. Not impossible the standard for pencils was never changed in this world.

Maybe in the Fallout world, they did use real lead for pencils everywhere and this helps explain why there was a nuclear war followed by settlers seemingly completely dependent upon the player character for every basic need.

OP can speak for himself as I've got plenty of lead in my pencil...... if you know what I mean? ;)

I remember a thread like this, we discussed the history of lead paints being used in pencils, and how it could have been done in the Fallout universe.
Too bad it died, not enough "Lead in Pencils" threads to go around.

no, lets be factual here, specualtion not needed. Pencils never had lead.

early chemists thought graphite was actually made of lead. And the german name for the pencil actually translates to lead pen.

hey, like today big oil pushing carbon emmisions as no big deal, back in the 60's and 70's we were breathing lead in by the tons from gasoline treated with it. if that hadnt changed when it did, we would all be walking around the streets like the walking dead by now chewing on each other.

Pfffft. Just take a close look at any of the junk, and the materials they produce, and the ratio of those materials to the thigns that you can build, or scrap, and tell me they are in any way realistic! This is A GAME. Things are there for fun, not for being completely realistic. And by the way, yes, lead was actually used in pencils a long time ago in the real world.

True but the problem is that a lot of people say 'they didn't know it was dangerous back then', when the truth is that they actually did know.

Just look at Asbestos? Often considered as safe until the early 1900's yet is was documented as being toxic by the Romans.

Thats from an old myth about there being asbestos in the filter of a cigarette.

Some tin foil hat crazies still actually burn the end of the filter to "remove the asbestos lining" lol.
